Mom's Prize Winning Raw Apple Cake

Reviewed: May 8, 2005
This was very good, but we didn't love it. I made it as written. It's quite sweet; I would prefer more apple or spice flavour, rather than 'sweet'. Because it was tender & moist, I might try it again with more spices, maybe as muffins. I should add, I did have 2 requests for the recipe.

BBQ Pork for Sandwiches

Reviewed: May 8, 2005
Really good! There's a Nor'easter blowing outside this weekend, but it tastes & smells like a summer bbq inside. I used a 3 pound picnic shoulder, & trimmed off the fat. Will make again.

Amazing Whole Wheat Pizza Crust

Reviewed: May 3, 2005
This is good, and I will make it again. I used it to make one pizza, since my husband likes thick crust, however, even he said "wow, that's filling": next time I'll use it for 2 crusts ;-)

This was okay tasting, but was heavy. I may try it again.

Honey Buttermilk Oatbread

Reviewed: Apr. 29, 2005
This bread tasted okay; it didn't stand out as good or bad, just bread. It rose nicely and the texture was good. It was a bit too salty.

Vegetable Lo Mein

Reviewed: Apr. 28, 2005
***1/2 I converted the recipe to 2 servings. The only change I made was to substitute shredded cabbage for the bean sprouts (didn't have them). It tasted good, but it was a bit too mild for us. Next time I would increase the curry, cayenne and hoisin sauce. I will make it again.

Original Nestle® Toll House® Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Apr. 20, 2005
The best chocolate chip cookie recipe. (I've used it for years.) I bake them for 8 minutes, so they're soft & chewy.

Oatmeal Peanut Butter Cookies III

Reviewed: Apr. 20, 2005
Wow - if you love peanut butter, then these are for you!! I followed the recipe exactly, except I baked them for only 7 minutes(until golden on the bottom): that way they're soft & chewy. They remind me of "Pirate Peanut Butter Cookies"; of course, these are better! I think the cookies would be excellent even without the filling. Best enjoyed with a glass of milk or a cup of tea!

Quick and Easy Pizza Crust

Reviewed: Apr. 19, 2005
This was good. I would use it again, when time is a factor; otherwise I would make a 'regular' crust. It was a bit too salty for me.

Garlic Chicken Pizza

Reviewed: Apr. 19, 2005
This was pretty good; I liked it better than the chicken pizza that uses ranch dressing for its sauce. I used Classico's Garlic Alfredo pasta sauce: 1/2 cup. I used part cheddar and part mozzarella cheese. I will also try adding some basil and more garlic.

Spinach and Sun-Dried Tomato Pasta

Reviewed: Apr. 15, 2005
I was looking for a recipe for an item recently removed from the menu of a local restaurant: this is very similar. I sautéed some sliced chicken breast with the garlic; otherwise I made it as written. We enjoyed it & will make it again.***The second time I made this, I used a tomato & basil flavoured pasta. It was a perfect compliment to this recipe.

Pretty Chicken Marinade

Reviewed: Apr. 11, 2005
Very tasty marinade. I used thai fish sauce (I was out of soy) and Dijon mustard. It did turn a nice caramel colour, as promised. I will make it again with chicken & I'll try it with pork, too... and I'll try the right ingredients, too:)

Sun Dried Tomato Focaccia

Reviewed: Apr. 8, 2005
***1/2 This was good, and I will make it again, but with a few changes (I made it exactly as per the recipe). We found it to be really sweet; next time I'll cut down on the sugar & maybe try 1/3 cup of tomatoes, as well as adding in some pepper. Also, I'll add the tomatoes in the last 5 minutes of kneading (in the machine): my bread was bright orange and only a few bits of tomato survived intact. I'll also try chilling the dough overnight, in hopes of a chewier texture.

Basil Tomato Pork Chops

Reviewed: Apr. 1, 2005
I sauteed the onion & garlic in the butter, removed them (I don't like burnt garlic), browned the chops in the leftover butter, then added the onions & garlic back in with the tomatoes & spices. The rest of the recipe I followed. I loved it. It's a mild, simple, delicious flavour. The pork loin chops I used only took 1/2 hour to cook. It was excellent with rice.

Soft Whole Wheat Sugar Cookies

Reviewed: Mar. 31, 2005
These are really good cookies! You wouldn't know that they were made with whole wheat flour. My first pan spread a bit too much, so, with the rest, I shook balls of dough in the cinnamon sugar in a zip lock bag & didn't flatten them at all. I will make them again.

Candy Turkeys

Reviewed: Mar. 29, 2005
These instructions are somewhat lacking. The candy corn beak should protrude from between the two other candies (or icing-glued onto them); pipe icing eyes onto the candy above the beak.

Garlic Mashed Potatoes Secret Recipe

Reviewed: Mar. 28, 2005
Excellent potato dish! Finally garlic mashed potatoes that taste garlicky. I think it's the cheese that really brings out the flavour. My only caution would be salt: the cheese adds a lot of salt, so be cautious about adding more.

Hot Cross Buns I

Reviewed: Mar. 26, 2005
These were okay. Not nearly as light and flavourful as my usual recipe. I think the main difference is that my recipe uses milk; it also calls for creaming the butter and sugar first, then beating in the egg. My husband and I ate them; I just wouldn't give any to my Mother-in-Law!

Seven Grain Bread II

Reviewed: Mar. 24, 2005
I added a tablespoon of gluten; the loaf was tall and not heavy. Next time I make this, I wlll try less salt: it tasted a bit too salty for me. The bread sliced nicely. I liked it toasted (athough I had to toast the slice, turn it upside down and re-toast it, because it was so tall): the millet in the grain mix I used annoyed me, but disappeared into the crunch of toast.
