Family-Style French Toast

Reviewed: Nov. 11, 2007
VERY good! I read someone's recommendation to use sliced apples in the bottom as well, so I sliced some granny smith apples very thin and placed in the bottom of the baking dish along with the butter and brown sugar. This had a perfect texture - not to dry and not too soggy. There was enough sweetness that it didn't need any syrup, but I used a wee bit anyway. :-D I will be making this again and again, and I can't wait to have company over for breakfast so I can try this out on them! Apple Crisp III

Reviewed: Nov. 4, 2007
I think I did something wrong with this one. The topping was never really a crumbly texture that I could "sprinkle" on the top. I think it was something I did. Anyway, I went with it and decided to spread it on the top, sort of like a dough... I omitted the cinnamon and instead tossed my apples with maple syrup flavoring and superfine sugar. I used just a spoonful of water since I read a lot of reviews that suggested cutting the water. The taste of the apples was great, and even though the top didn't turn out as it probably should have, it still had a great buttery sweet flavor. Will try this again perhaps just to see if I can get the top right.

Caramel Popcorn

Reviewed: Oct. 13, 2007
This was really, really great. It was a lot easier to make than I would ever have expected. I don't care much for vanilla so I substituted maple flavoring and I didn't have enough corn syrup so I used a previous poster's suggestion and used honey instead. My 6 year old and I are probably going to finish it and not have any left for DH when he gets home from work! Thanks for the recipe!

Grandma Ople's Apple Pie

Reviewed: Oct. 13, 2007
I LOVE this pie. I usually make this exactly as directed. Pouring the yummy liquid on the top not only gives you a beautiful looking pie, but the crust tastes absolutely wonderful (coming from a person who typically will eat everything BUT the crust!). I actually prefer no cinnamon in this pie, but will oftentimes make my own cinnamon ice cream (recipe is on this site), and it goes perfectly together! I will make this pie even when apples aren't in season - it's totally worth it. Thanks for sharing!

Beer Chops I

Reviewed: Sep. 29, 2007
Smells really great whilst cooking and the chops were ultra-tender. I think this is a good base for a more flavorful recipe - just need to experiment with some spices to find the perfect combination. Don't think the chicken cubes are enough.

Best Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Aug. 25, 2007
I think this would be a good recipe for a big chocolate chip cookie cake that you might make on a large pan. Don't get me wrong - the taste is very nice when they're warm and fresh from the oven. And they're really good with milk. But mixing the dough was difficult - way too dry. At one point, I had to use a pastry cutter to get all the flour incorporated. After reading reviews (30 pages worth) and not seeing anything from anyone about having difficulty mixing, I figured it was just how it was supposed to be and I was being a whimp. I had a hard time telling if these were done because they didnt appear to change in color, but they did smell wonderful. I think I will try this one again, but reduce the amount of flour or perhaps melt the butter like I read one reviewer had done. Something to perhaps make it a bit more moist so that the cookie spreads when it bakes. Thanks for sharing - I'm not giving up on this one yet.

Apple Pie by Grandma Ople

This was surprisingly easy to make. But it certainly tastes like something I spent all day making. This is by far the best homemade pie I have ever made - this recipe is phenomenal! Thank you for sharing!

Herald's Impossibly Easy Cheeseburger Pie

Reviewed: May 25, 2007
This was very easy to make, and turned out very well. Unfortunately my son and husband don't like tomatoes, so I used ketchup instead for the burger-like flavor. I also added a bit of Worcestershire sauce as well. For the topping, I think I added too much milk accidentally, but I managed to balance it out and it still turned out very well. I think I'm going to use the suggestion someone else posted and try adding bacon next time! I will definitely be making this again!! Thanks for posting!

Very good and very filling. I've made this many times and have tried adding different ingredients each time, my favorite one being andouille sausage. It's very versatile and best of all, easy and fast to prepare. Thanks for sharing this one!

Golden Sweet Cornbread

Reviewed: Apr. 22, 2006
I made this cornbread in a hurry to go with a pot of stew, and I was worried because there are so many good cornbread recipes. This is my new favorite. It's so easy to make and the reward is wonderful, sweet cornbread. The only change I made was to substitute melted butter for the oil, but that's just because I didn't have oil on hand. It was wonderful. No more box mixes for me!

Chocolate Meringue Cookies

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2005
FANTASTIC! I do Weight Watchers, and have been on program for two years now, and whenever I crave something sweet, I would usually go out and spend about $5 on a box of Miss Meringues cookies. I found this recipe and I haven't bought a box since. They are so wonderfully chocolatey and even without the additional chocolate chips (which I omitted the first time I made them and included the second time), they are still wonderful. The best part is that I can control what goes into them to make them sugar-free (by substituting Splenda), and I can have enough to satisfy myself for very few points. Thank you very much for sharing this great recipe!

Chicken Marsala

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2005
This was really a fantastic dish. Usually, if we want chicken marsala, we have to drive about 1 hour to our favorite Italian place, and the prices make it impossible to enjoy it more often. I am so pleased with the way this recipe turned out that I will definitely make it again and again! Jules

Mark's English Sausage Rolls

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2005
My husband is from Northern Ireland and can have sausage rolls only when he visits home (about once a year). So needless to say, he was totally stoked about the idea that I could make these at home. I surprised him with them one day when he got home from work, and he was really pleased. Also, since I'm making them, I control the ingredients and can tailor them to my way of eating to make them lower in fat/calories. Thanks! Jules

Pumpkin Polenta Cake

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2005
This recipe is actually a good jumping-off point. I adjusted a few things... reduced the salt/baking soda by half, and added 1/2 c Splenda for some extra sweetness. I didnt have all the individual spices on hand, so I just used pumpkin pie spice (1 1/2 tsp). I didn't use store-bought polenta, but instead made my own homemade. And while I had to let it bake for longer than 45 mins (total time of 1 1/2 hours), it was a fantastic flavor and really great for my low-calorie/low-fat lifestyle. I can see a lot of things to do with this recipe, but it is a great start. Thanks for sharing your idea! Jules
