Cucumber and Avocado Sushi

Reviewed: Oct. 14, 2007
This is a good recipe for a basic sushi. Including avocado and cucumber as a starting point, we also added a thin slice of omlette, crab meat, and roasted bell peppers. In another roll, we put tuna, supremed oranges and blanched asparagus spears. In yet another roll, we put pickled beets and goat cheese. You can do just about anything with sushi.

Mulligatawny Soup II

Reviewed: Sep. 23, 2007
Although this is a tasty soup, it was just a little disappointing. I found it a bit too creamy for my taste and had to double the amount of lemon juice. I also added chili flakes to help increase the heat and used two fresh tomatoes instead of tomato paste. The soup was quite filling (a little goes a long way), especially if you eat it with a nice slice of toasted rye rubbed with garlic and fresh tomatoes. A crisp green salad would make this a complete and satisfying meal.

Tabbouleh II

Reviewed: Aug. 28, 2007
A very nice salad. I added some sweet corn fresh off the cob for a contrast to the tartness of the lemon, with great success. I also used green onions instead of regular white onions. In another batch, I added some toasted pine nuts and reduced the lemon, again with success. Of these two versions, I prefer the first.

Clone of a Cinnabon

Reviewed: Aug. 24, 2007
No icing necessary -- these cinnamon buns are sweet enough without. In fact, they're sublime, superb, superlative, supreme, super-duper, sans-pareille, sinful, and just so good that I can't find any more adjectives. I tried them with apricot and almonds (without success) so stick to the recipe and you'll be happier than you can imagine. Thank you, Marsha Fernandez!!!

Deep Dish Brownies

Reviewed: Aug. 24, 2007
Made these several times-- each time there was a slightly burnt taste to the brownies, even though they were not overcooked. Not exactly what I was looking for... Teenaged son still asks for them regularly...

Pierogi (Polish Dumplings)

Reviewed: Aug. 24, 2007
Thank you, Theresa! Dough was exceptional. Flavourful and relatively easy to work with. Filling: I added slow cooked onions and bacon and chives to the mashed potatoes -- much to the delight of everyone. Fried pierogies in butter, and taste was delightful. The one surprise was that my 2 1/2 inch pierogies became 3 1/3 inch pierogies once boiled, but I'm not complaining! Delightful fare served with spinach salad (no sour cream necessary!). My teenaged son actually asked for the recipe! I suspect that he'll make them for a birthday treat for me soon....
