Alissa's Vegetarian Lentil Meatloaf

Reviewed: Sep. 15, 2007
I cooked this recipe according to the directions and it came out fine, not too mushy or dry. I followed suggestions from the previous reviewers and topped it with tomato paste and ketchup. This recipe was pretty good, but I didn't like the thyme. The thyme flavour really overwhelmed the whole recipe. I think this one might be better if it went in a more Indian direction, using cumin and coriander instead of the thyme. I'll definitely alter the spices if I make it again, but I did like the lentil/flax/wheat germ/veggie aspects of the dish.

African Sweet Potato and Peanut Soup

Reviewed: Sep. 15, 2007
I loved this recipe! I used a 900 ml carton of vegetable broth instead of the water and added a 19 oz can of chickpeas. I used 2 medium-sized yams, rather than sweet potatoes, and I don't know how much they weighed. I only pureed about half of the recipe and then added 1/4c of dried black currants at the end and let it cook for another 5 minutes to plump the currants. Adding the fruit made this recipe similar to the Delicious Chickpea Curry (also on this site), but this was so much better with the peanut butter and chopped peanuts. Really good combination of flavours.

Mung Bean Stew

Reviewed: Sep. 15, 2007
This was pretty good, but not much of a stew. It didn't have enough broth to classify as a stew or a soup. Perhaps it was more of a casserole? It had ALOT of potatoes. It was very much a comfort food type of dish. Fairly plain and filling, but nice.

Marrakesh Vegetable Curry

Reviewed: Aug. 26, 2007
This was pretty good, but a tad bitter. I added some brown sugar at the end and that got rid of the bitterness. I also doubled the spices as other reviewers recommended and I halved the oil. I cooked the vegetables in 1 tbsp of oil and the spices in 2 tbsp of oil and that seemed to work fine. This recipe was similar to the Delicious Chickpea Curry and I liked the chickpea curry better (sweeter with a stronger cinnamon flavour).

Bissara

Reviewed: Aug. 26, 2007
I really liked this recipe. I omitted the olive oil (why is it in there?), but kept the vegetable oil to fry up the garlic. I also added a 14 oz can of crushed tomatoes in addition to the 6 cups of water. That was good, but it was still pretty thick at the end. Next time I think I might try a 28 oz can of chopped tomatoes. I also served this with cooked whole buckwheat.

Beets With Orange and Ginger

Reviewed: Aug. 26, 2007
This was pretty good. I used dried pineapple instead of the candied ginger based on another reviewer's complaint about the spiciness of the ginger. The pineapple worked well. The recipe mostly tastes like beets in thick orange juice. Not hugely exciting, but not bad either. It might actually be more fun with pineapple juice instead of the orange juice. The pineapple and nuts (I used pecans instead of walnuts) were an added bonus.

Delicious Chickpea Curry

Reviewed: Aug. 19, 2007
Really yummy. I used dried black currants instead of raisins. I also halved the cayenne, but I don't think it needed to be halved. It wasn't too hot.
