Inspired by Allrecipes Cakes

One thing I like about Allrecipes is it challenges me in baking and making artisan breads and bakery quality cakes. If I am going to make a cake, I like to look for one with layers, fillings, whipped cream icing, fruit, chocolate, or just about any addition that will taste and look great! Every year I make it a challenge, for myself, to find another great cake recipe on Allrecipes to make for my husband’s birthday. My cake challenge started a few years ago when we didn’t have much money and I asked if I could find an inspiring cake, to make from Allrecipes, which has turned into a yearly tradition.
Some of the cakes I have made are a checkerboard cake, with an icing recipe from Allrecipes. Another favorite, I have made, was a Boston cream cake with a homemade yellow cake and a pastry cream filling with a chocolate fondant icing on the top. I also added a neat white fondant icing design I found from on-line. A recent one included a black forest cake, with homemade chocolate cake layers and cherry filling cooked on the stove top. I was told by an Allrecipes member, on the recipe buzz, how to make whipped cream icing to ice the cake. It worked perfect, to cover the cake, and held up nicely in the fridge. This year’s flavor was a tiramisu cake that included coffee liqueur, chocolate shavings, and a mascarpone and whipped cream filling. I learned a neat trick, from that recipe, to make chocolate curls using a potato peeler!  I look forward to finding that perfect cake from Allrecipes every year. I hope you feel  inspired from these cake recipes, I am going to post, and have made from the site. Feel free to give me the link, from Allrecipes, for my next year's layer cake.

I actually use the yellow cake from that lemon cake for cakes for bbq's or even on Christmas. I just make it into a 13x9 pan or a sheet cake. It is the famous lemon cake from the site. I LOVE the cake, just not a fan of the filling or icing on it. The cake part is in my recipe box though. I lost count how many times I made it since trying it. As a pot luck cake I just top it with stablized whipped cream or even container whipped topping! TY Sonja very much for the idea!

I take a slice of lemon cake please. Great blog. Tiramisu layer cake looks enticing. Great tip on using a potato peeler to make chocolate shavings.

Pretty cakes, BB. I have so few reasons to bake them anymore I mostly stick with small desserts. Nice you have people to share them with. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Lela, I do like trying the different recipes because I learn a new technique with each one. Thank you also, Marie C. With 2 of us, I can't much make big desserts either. I save these cakes for my husband's birthdays. I hope I get a few more recipes I can try.

Maybe I am just not seeing it, but did you post the link to the Lemon Cake? That looks so good, especially for spring. Your cakes are beautiful. Nice blog and photos, BB.

I did not post the recipes to the lemon cake. Only because I loved the cake, but not the icing or filling. I will post it here if you like.

You ALL make some great ones, both cakes and breads, from the site too! I get to look at your pics. and reviews, over the years, before I attempt them. That is the greatness of this site.

Thinking that all of us that don't bake much anymore will just come to your house when you make them. They do look beautiful !

Thanks Shearone, I was looking at a raspberry and I think walnut one this year. So, maybe next year. It looks like the reviews are good on it!

Wow, you have an amazing talent! I can't wait to try my first checkboard cake.

TY Moaa - I used this one. Although, its a flimsy easily rustable set. So, if you plan on making the cake more than once try a more expensive brand. -

Hi, Marie ~ That is so impressive! I love mocha flavored desserts, and I have also always wanted to try a dessert with the meringue layers. Good find!

About Me
I have been a member with a profile since 2007, but was scoping the site many years before that printing recipes. It was a life saver in college and continues to be well used today, as my eating habits change. I graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.A. degree. I also received a certification in Culinary Arts & Baking and Pastry making, from a local community college, to fullfill a long lived interest.
My favorite things to cook
Overall, I just really enjoy trying new recipes. I have been interested in both healthier cooking and baking lately, testing blended smoothies, soups, healthier versions of site recipes, consuming more varieties of fresh produce, and baking with whole grains.
My favorite family cooking traditions
We had quite a few growing up. Too many to mention. Now, I enjoy finding new recipes, to make each year, to take to holiday parties. I have a few recipe boxes, one which is just for holidays, which keeps expanding. That is when I spend the time making a layered cake, cheesecake, cookies, or just a new fun holiday recipe sweet or savory. I save them during the year as I find them.
My cooking triumphs
As a child it was baking and decorating dozens of Christmas cookies, each year, at my grandmas. Currently, it is all my ever growing knowledge in cooking and baking and becoming an Allrecipes Allstar. Here is a video I was a part of, one year, for Kahlua and
My cooking tragedies
I am sure we have all had a few, that's how we learn. My biggest kitchen dissasters were having a glass dish explode in the oven and using a broiler for the first time and catching the vegetables on fire. I have learned, don't ever leave the broiler when it's on.
