About this Cook
Retired telephone co. marketing manager. Retired County Commissioner.
My favorite things to cook
Just about anything that looks good to me.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Traditional (old fashaioned) handed down from my mother and mother in law. Not healthy, I'm afraid, but wonderful food. Our way of cooking really good stuff is to use sugar in almost everything. Not necessarily real sweet but cuts a lot of things! Enhances flavors. Mostly cook healthy now but on holidays we let it ALL hang out!
My cooking triumphs
old fashioned oven baked candied sweet potatoes. Scalloped oysters. Corn, still the old fashioned way with butter, sugar, salt and pepper. Chili.
My cooking tragedies
I know there have been quite a few but can't remember what they were. Throw it out and go on to the next!

Movie Star Popcorn
Ican't stand microwave popcorn. I've used a whirly pop popper for years. It's great! Another variation that I make often is to add about 1/2 cup of sugar to the oil just before adding the corn. Makes a sweet carmel corn-like taste. I then add salt to it after pouring the popped corn into a bowl. I love sweer and salty.

Easy Homestyle Green Beans
This is for those who thought the beans tasted like the can. Just add a tsp of brown sugar per can You'll never know that they're not home canned green beans! Also try cooking them with jowl bacon (available at all supermarkets). The old fashioned way of cooking! Don't use the whole piece, it doesn't take a whole lot to flavor the beans.

Bacon Baked Beans
This is the way I've always made baked beans but instead of apple, I add 1 can (drained) pineapple tidbits, finely chopped onion, and green pepper. If you like more of a sweet and sour taste try adding a little yellow mustard. About 1/2 teaspoon. You'll especially love the pineapple tidbits.
