Eggnog I

Reviewed: Nov. 23, 2009
This is the best!! I normally don't like the stuff, but was desperate when my dad was coming for the holidays and his favorite brand wasn't available in our area. I crossed my fingers and gave this a shot. WOW!! It was amazing! My husband and I don't normally finish even the smaller sized one from the store, but we finished all of it off in two nights!! We added rum and it was fantastic! The only thing I'd change is to double the recipe next time!!!

Amazingly Good Eggnog

Reviewed: Nov. 23, 2009
Extremely good eggnog. I am not normally a huge fan of the stuff, but I have family who loves it. The brand that is their favorite isn't available where I live, and the ones that were at the store left much to be desired. Desperate, I decided to try making it and cross my fingers. Wow. Delicious. Add rum - not too strong - and you are in holiday heaven. My hubby and I ended up finishing the entire first batch off ourselves! Next time the only change I'll make is to double the batch from the start AND make a rum and non-rum version. Thank you!!!

Gourmet Sweet Potato Classic

Reviewed: Nov. 23, 2009
This is simply the best sweet potato casserole ever. It was perfect - sweet but not too sweet. I made it exactly as the recipe states, no alterations. Normally I end up tweaking recipes slightly to adjust to my families tastes, but this one needs no changes. The spices really complimented the flavor of the sweet potatoes and the crunchy nut topping added a a great contrast to the smooth potatoes. The egg makes the entire casserole lighter and not so dense and heavy as other recipes. My husband normally doesn't like sweet potato casseroles but he loved this one and there were no leftovers. LOVED IT!

Chuck's Favorite Mac and Cheese

Reviewed: Oct. 18, 2009
This is by far the best mac and cheese I have ever eaten. I loved it and, more importantly, so did my whole family of picky eaters. I was nervous with the inclusion of cottage cheese, but the recipe is perfect as it is. I didn't change anything the first time I made it. The second time I made some changes to make it a bit more diet friendly. I simply substituted the lower fat versions of everything (low fat, NOT non-fat because then it is gross) and it was still delicious. I have to be careful to get enough protein and between the Barilla Plus pasta I used and the cottage cheese and other cheeses, this is a great dinner! Lots of protein and really not too much fat, with the substitutions. Any way you make it, this is delicious.!

The Best Rolled Sugar Cookies

Reviewed: Oct. 18, 2009
This is the BEST sugar cookie recipe I have ever made. I normally don't like sugar cookies and don't bother to make them. But I really wanted to have some rolled cookies for my new halloween cookie cutters. This recipe was perfect for that. So easy!! And I normally struggle with rolling cookies. This is delicious even plain (without rolling, etc.) I did follow the advice of others and upped the vanilla, and I also swapped out a cup of the sugar for a cup of Splenda and they still were delicious. No one noticed and I got rave reviews. Also, definitely use the parchment paper and use powdered sugar sparingly to help roll it out. That saved me a ton of headache - amazing recipe! Thanks!!

Sage Pork Chops

Reviewed: Sep. 15, 2009
This is a great recipe for pork chops. I am somewhat picky about the way I like pork chops and before this, the recipes I would actually use for pork chops was around four - any other way and I didn't like them. My recipe number is now five. This is a deceptively simple recipe. It is simple and only has a few ingredients and a few directions, but the result is simple and delicious. This is a huge hit around my house and I get requests for the recipe often. This recipe is good for regular dinner rotation as well as a recipe for company. I highly recommend it.

Ruth's Grandma's Pie Crust

Reviewed: Sep. 15, 2009
I don't often remember to come back and rate and/or review recipes after I print them out and make them. I either like them and add them to a pile of recipes that I occasionally make (the pile of recipes for an excess of some fruit or veggie, the need something special for guests, or recipes for party food, etc. OR I don't like it and toss it. But this recipe is one that is do good, I simply couldn't NOT come on the site and rave about it. The recipe is perfect as it. Don't touch it, don't mess with it. Period. I have never been able to make a good pie crust ever. I always seemed to mess it up and make it too dry or too mushy, no matter how careful I was about adding the water a teaspoon at a time. This recipe is the best thing I have ever seen in terms of foolproof. If you take this recipe and just add everything and follow the directions, you will have the best pie crust you have ever tasted. Add to that the fact that it is by far and away the BEST tasting pie crust I have ever eaten (and I have french grandmothers and have lived in Italian bakery neighborhoods of NYC) bar none. If you are reading this, throw away every pie crust recipe you have and put this one in your heirloom recipe book. And then thank the lady who submitted this!!

Serbian Ground Beef, Veggie, and Potato Bake

Reviewed: Sep. 15, 2009
This recipe is awesome! I have already recommended it to friends and family. I hate when someone changes the recipe extensively and then rates it lower. The first time I made this, I made it exactly as listed, except for the hot pepper (which my family doesn't like) and it was excellent. My husband and picky kids ate all of it and raved. The second time I made a few adjustments to better suit our family - I peeled and cubed the potatoes and added quite a few more, as well as adding them to the veggies in the skillet. I lessened the amount of pepper, as well as omitting the red pepper again, but that was about it. Be sure to use a good dash of the cinnamon and cloves - it does make a big difference and you will thank yourself for it when you take the first bite!! This dish is so yummy and as been added to my weekly dinner rotation, due to the frequent begging I get to make this dish!! Thanks!!

Megan's Granola

Reviewed: Jun. 22, 2009
This recipe is ridiculously good! My whole family (not one of us big granola fans) loved it. I made it because we are going on a long road trip and wanted a healthy snack for all of us. I decided to try this recipe and am so glad I did!! I only used 1/4 cup honey and then 1 cup maple syrup and the listed amount of brown sugar and it was perfect. It was just sweet enough for us. Also, use the 1 Tbsp of cinnamon and vanilla. It adds so much - I also have mixed and matched the fruit, nuts, and seeds that I used. The only warning is this recipe makes a HUGE amount. Given how good it is, that was a good thing for my family.

Butterscotch Oatmeal

Reviewed: Jun. 10, 2009
I always forget to come back and actually review the recipes, but I just had to comment on this one. This is a great recipe, exactly the way it is. But it is also very easy to adapt, if you want to or need to (diabetics, etc.) My husband raves about this oatmeal and begs me to make it all the time. While I love the recipe as is, I normally add some pecan pieces and a bit of vanilla right at the end. Sometimes a bit of milk or half and half in the bowl right before serving. Regardless, it always turns out delicious!

Absolute Best Pancake Syrup

Reviewed: Feb. 13, 2008
All right, this is seriously the best syrup ever. No more store bought ever again. But there are a few things you should know when making it - first of all, when I first put the ingredients in the pot, the milk curdled and looked gross and it took a little while for it to set up correctly (just a minute really, but I thought it would be faster to go from curdled looking to syrup looking and was worried that I had messed it up). I also read the other reviews that mentioned how thin it ends up, so I took 1 tsp of cornstarch and added just enough water to make it liquid, then added it to the mix when I added the baking soda. It was very foamy but still delicious. My kids loved it. I ended up eating a little later (you know, get them off to school and then get a chance to eat some waffles myself) and by that time, the syrup had cooled off, thickened up to about the same as store syrup, and lost all the frothiness. We'll see whether it will become a gel when it cools off completely - I tried to use just a little cornstarch to avoid that. But whatever the form, frothy, syrupy or gel - this stuff is delicious. It does not taste like store bought stuff, but rather a buttery cinnamon syrup. Much better and I didn't have to butter the waffles before the syrup because the butter was already in there! All in all, a great recipe that will get written into my favorites recipe book.

Honey Chicken Stir-Fry

Reviewed: Feb. 11, 2008
Really this should be 4 and a half stars. I loved this recipe and my family raved about it too. With a 8 yo boy, a 4 yo girl and a picky husband that is just about a miracle! I made a few alterations - I added some garlic cloves, I used peanut oil instead of what was listed, added some ginger; but really they were small changes based on our tastes - you could make it exactly as it is and have a great dinner or you could add a few things here and there and make it your own. A great recipe.

Hawaiian Banana Nut Bread

Reviewed: Feb. 11, 2008
I was looking for a recipe to use up the old bananas I had, but I wanted something a little different. I tried this and LOVED it. Follow the recipe exactly. There is nothing to change or make a little better - it it just perfect the way it is. Sweet but not too sweet. I have passed this recipe on to many friends now and everyone calls back to rave about it. Just the best - thanks!
