Barley Turkey Soup

Reviewed: Jun. 24, 2007
This is delicious, and easily versatile...you can tweak it to become beef barley soup by substituting beef stock and cubed beef for the chicken stock and turkey, and achieve similar results. We doubled the barley in the recipe because we like a lot, and added some shredded potato. Very yummy!

Ham and Beans

Reviewed: Jun. 19, 2007
The brown sugar overpowered the dish, and was too sweet for our likings. Other than that, everything else was O.K.

Green Chile Chicken Soup

Reviewed: Jun. 17, 2007
Really very thick, not the best in a spicy soup. The chiles were a nice touch, but this burned going down. Was not impressed. Thanks anyways, but we won't be making this again.

Bologna Salad Sandwich Spread I

Reviewed: Jun. 17, 2007
This stuff is the best!! Reminds me of growing up as a kid, although we get the thicker bologna and julienne it instead of turning everything smooth. Good as just a salad that way really, overall it's pretty darn good! Very similar to what the local deli makes, which I used to buy before finding this recipe, thanks for sharing.

Cream Cheese Penguins

Reviewed: Jun. 17, 2007
These were really cute! More for presentation than they were for eating however, they didn't exactly taste very good -I wasn't fond of the whole cream cheese stuffed olives idea- and were not worth the time and effort it took, especially reading after all of those star reviews. Adorable presentation though.

Spiced Pumpkin Seeds

Reviewed: Jun. 16, 2007
Finally, a snack that is delicious, and good for you too! We always save the seeds from our Jack 'O lantern pumpkins around Halloween and make so many batches of these...the signature dish that makes my boyfriend bring all of his friends around in the fall months. What a great way to use everything up! Thanks for sharing :)

Irish Soda Bread V

Reviewed: Jun. 16, 2007
My boyfriend and I really enjoyed this, it goes great with any kind of thick soup or stew! The bread didn't seem to rise enough, although maybe that was just me..it's good though!

Penne a la Vodka I

Reviewed: Jun. 12, 2007
I am a huge pasta lover, and let me say, I was not disappointed with this dish! Substituted Italian pancetta for actual bacon, added in a pinch of Italian seasoning and used rotini spirals since we didn't have any penne, but it never marred the taste a bit, enhanced it if anything. Warning: 12 ounces of pasta makes a lot, so double the amount of water needed.

Dad's Excellent Scallops

Reviewed: Jun. 12, 2007
The prosciutto definitely makes the recipe. The tastes blended especially well, and the texture was really good too. We decided to use garlic butter for variation, and found it even better!!

Cheesy cauliflower mess, more like. We didn't really like this casserole...thanks anyways, though.

Roasted Beet Wedges

Reviewed: Jun. 8, 2007
Just how we make the beets here at home. My dad is a huge fan of roasted beets, and this recipe has now become a favourite of his, and mine too. Thanks for sharing, Wendy!

Easy Chicken Coconut Curry

Reviewed: Jun. 8, 2007
This just didn't do it for me, perhaps the excess amount of coconut milk made it too sweet for our likings. The boyfriend enjoyed it though, and said shredded coconut would make a nice touch. Will be making it again for him, but something else for me next time.

Nutmeg Mushrooms

Reviewed: Jun. 7, 2007
We were not very fond of these, perhaps a little too sweet for us even though we reduced the amount of nutmeg to half. Will not be making these again, the leftover mushrooms when drained from the sauce did make good compost though.

Antipasto Pasta Salad

Reviewed: Jun. 7, 2007
I love cold pasta salads, and this dish really hit it home for me!! Dumped an entire bottle of Kraft salad dressing in there instead of using oil and vinegar, and I believe it may have captured the Italian flavours even more. Ended up being a huge hit, even though I did use macaroni instead of seashells too, but everything was just as good. Thanks so much for sharing!

Pumpkin Stew

Reviewed: Jun. 6, 2007
This is such a unique recipe, presentation is gorgeous, and I believe that the pumpkin itself adds to the flavours of the stew and enriches the beef taste quite well. Very original, and delicious in the fall months. For a summer variation, try making a cold soup inside a hollowed out summer squash.

Chicken Flautas

Reviewed: Jun. 6, 2007
Whether it be taquito, flauta, taco or burrito, I do know what these things are...Delicious! I ended up using flour tortillas that did go a little doughy on me when they were fried, but the mixture inside definitely makes up for it. The cumin was omitted as neither my boyfriend or I am fond of it, but they still tasted just as great. These are best served with homemade salsa and guacamole, and I accompanied them with a black bean and rice mixture.

Shrimp Verde

Easy, yes. Delicious? Not so much. The flavours were too bland, and as a poor student who can rarely afford seafood, I found this dish to be a waste of money.

Mama D's Italian Bread

Reviewed: Jun. 3, 2007
This was so good, and much cheaper to make than buying an actual Italian loaf from the nearest bakery. Instructions were a little hard for me to follow at points, being a beginner chef, but this turned out quite well in the end! Next time I will try baking some cheese in there, if possible.

Naan

Reviewed: Jun. 2, 2007
Warning: too much yeast can result in air pockets, and some not so fluffy naan bread. I have had naan before in Indian restaurants, and tried to recreate it from this recipe at home. Very delicious bread, sure, but mine ended up being flat and slightly gooey. Shall give this another attempt, though.
