Greek Lentil Soup (Fakes)

Reviewed: Jan. 2, 2011
This is NOT something I would usually try to make, but a long time ago I bought a bag of lentils and had no idea what to do with them. I had all the other ingredients on hand so I gave it a try. I like it! I did make some changes: double the recipe EXCEPT for the amount of oil - left that at 1/4 cup, no rosemary, can of tomato sauce instead of paste. The vinegar at the end is delicious and necessary. I've tried both red wine and balsamic - both were good. This was SO CHEAP to make, filling and pretty healthy (5 WW PointsPlus points/cup).

Middle Eastern Turkey Dogs

Reviewed: Nov. 1, 2010
These were pretty good but I tried to skewer and grill and they fell apart. I think next time I would grill as patties like a regular hamburger. Served in a whole wheat pita with red onion, tomato and tzatziki sauce. Yum!

Stuffed Green Peppers I

Reviewed: Aug. 19, 2010
I made some changes, but still found these a bit bland and crumbly. Didn't add cheese to mixture - just topped the peppers. Added Italian style tomatoes instead of plain. Only used one can tomato soup and some tomato paste. Next time I think I'd make something more like a meatloaf mixture to stuff the peppers with (raw) and cook longer. Everything just kind of spilled out and they were messy to eat.

Spinach Tomato Tortellini

Reviewed: Nov. 8, 2009
Good - but not great. Used all half and half instead of the milk and cream. Doubled the garlic. Drained the tomatoes. Used a whole bag of baby spinach. It tastes good, but a bit bland. Could maybe use some red pepper or something. I think a second can of tomatoes would "zip" it up some.

Sugar Spiced Almonds

Reviewed: Dec. 20, 2008
This recipe would be better if the sugar and spices glazed the nuts rather than just made a dusty mess on them. Maybe I did something wrong? They weren't too spicy though, which was good.

Russian Black Bread

Reviewed: Dec. 19, 2008
I just made this tonight as a "test run" for Christmas - delicious! I followed the recipe to a T, but only made the dough in the bread machine as I don't care for the shape it makes. Then I baked it the same way as Mark Bittman's "No Knead Bread" recipe - in a cast iron pot with a lid at 450 for a half hour. Then removed the lid and baked another 15. This gives it a CRISPY crust and a soft, moist middle. Very flavorful - I love this bread with Peanut butter for breakfast.

Robbi's M&M Cookies

Reviewed: Jun. 14, 2008
I had a craving for M&M cookies and these hit the spot! I used 1/2 butter and 1/2 butter flavored crisco. Not sure how that may have affected the flavor - but they came out perfect. Rather than just dropping the dough, I rolled into balls and then flattened - that way I got picture perfect "bakery" cookies. Next time I won't add the M&Ms to the dough and instead just push them in the top so I can better control the candy to cookie ratio :) Thanks for the recipe!

Tomato Gorgonzola Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 2, 2008
This was pretty good, but I don't think it was worth the effort. I left out the red pepper and used half and half and reduced fat cream cheese. I also used an immersion blender on it, though it didn't work great. I think next time I'd just toss some gorgonzola crumbles and basil into a can of cream of tomato soup!

Luscious Spinach Artichoke Dip

Reviewed: Dec. 25, 2007
This wasn't the best dip I've had, but it wasn't too bad. Unless you make a double batch or have the ingredients on hand, its kind of a pain to need such small amounts of the ingredients. Next time I think I'd leave out the spinach or try a new recipe. Edible and tasty, but not great!

Cafeteria Macaroni and Cheese

Reviewed: Dec. 16, 2007
This was my first attempt at homemade mac 'n cheese and I might just have to go back to the blue box! It was bland and not creamy at all - more like clumps of cheese here and there, not throughout the dish. I think I once read that you can't use pre-shredded cheese for mac 'n cheese? Maybe that was the problem. Either way, I won't be making it again and I'll probably throw out the leftovers - I'm glad I only made half the recipe!!

Taco Soup II

Reviewed: Nov. 3, 2007
I think I would call this "Southwestern Chili" instead of Taco Soup, but regardless, it's got a nice flavor. I did alter the recipe (and I hate when people rate altered recipes!) but thought I'd chime in. I used canned corn instead of hominy, left out the ranch packet, used 1lb. of ground turkey, one can each of black beans and pinto beans, and a can of southwest chopped tomatoes because I don't like stewed tomatoes. It is definitely more than 6 servings! And very thick. I added a bit more water but then the flavor was too tame - I might add another seasoning packet. It's pretty healthy and full of fiber, so that's nice, but it wasn't really what I expected. I'm not sure if I'd make it again or not.

Rhubarb Sour Cream Pie

Reviewed: Aug. 11, 2007
My pie is actually still baking, but I used a deep dish pie crust and only 3 cups of rhubarb and my pie was overflowing! Hopefully it'll turn out ok anyway, becuase it sounds fantastic. I'll edit after I've tasted it. EDIT: The pie was good, but maybe a bit too sweet. I would reduce the sugar next time.

New England Clam Chowder I

Reviewed: Feb. 24, 2007
I just made this and am pretty disappointed - its way too watery. I added celery and used clam juice to boil the potatoes in stead of water and instead of adding it in at the end- thinking that would add more flavor and not water it down. I was wrong. Its still pretty bland - like someone else said, more like a potato soup. I also omitted the bacon fearing it would overpower the clams - I'm glad I left it out! I was planning on giving half the pot to my grandparents, but I'm too embarrased to now. I won't make this recipe again.

Cranberry Puffs

Reviewed: Jan. 19, 2007
I made these for New Years Eve with my food processor I got for Christmas. I loved them - I seeded the jalepeno so they weren't too spicy I think next time I'd like them spicier. My mom didn't think they'd be very good and she liked them, and my dad and brother LOVED them (I didn't think they would). I said I'd make them next Christmas and he said "No! Don't wait that long!" I'm not a fan of frying things though, so I think next time I'll use a fry daddy or something like that.
