Senate Bean Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 15, 2013
I have had the original when I lived outside of DC and this is very similar EXCEPT I believe the original uses Navy beans. I think the addition of some tomato product is a very tasty and healthy option.

Filipino Lumpia

Reviewed: Oct. 5, 2010
Very traditional recipe that I was taught by a lovely Filipino lady when I lived on Guam years ago. She taught me to make the wrappers with cornstarch and water, swiping the mixture on a hot griddle with a sponge. An authentic dipping sauce for these is garlic infused vinegar...crush a clove in a dish of vinegar, let sit for a few hours. Yes, smelly, acidic, but wonderful!! Also can dip in chili sauce or Chinese style mustard.

Sausage Gravy III

Reviewed: Nov. 23, 2009
Just gave it four stars because of the fat/calorie content. There is no need for the extra fat in the margarine and also when I make it I drain the excess fat out of the pan after cooking the sausage, there is still enough to make the roux with the flour. Someone commented that you can't reheat it with the bisquits in the microwave, they get tough. Very true, but just nuke the bisquits separately for a shorter period of time. We never have fresh milk on hand so I use powdered skim milk and it works great and again, fewer calories.

Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken Sandwiches

Reviewed: Jul. 2, 2009
To enlighten The Alchemist about the Buffalo in Buffalo wings. They originated in the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, NY (been there, ate there, loved it). Their fiery sauce is made on site, but there are many good bottled types available. They're served with a side of celery and blue cheese dressing to cool your mouth in between bites of the spicy sauced wings (no, the dressing is not for dipping the wings). Since original wings are deep fat fried, then tossed in butter, then the sauce, this recipe is a very healthy alternative.

Egg Noodles

Reviewed: Aug. 20, 2008
Great recipe (especially with the suggestion of substituting some whole wheat flour) and thanks for the cool suggestion of letting the kiddos cut our shapes.

Wonton Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 17, 2007
Excellent recipe. A quick hint for saving wontons for the freezer. Freeze individually on a cookie sheet, toss in a freezer bag and you can retrieve as many as you want. Good sauted for unexpected guests when you need something to munch on.
