Cheese Lasagna

Reviewed: Aug. 7, 2012
Sorry, but I need a little more flavor! I used 3 c. ricotta cheese, 1/4 c. dried parsley, and 3 eggs. I also included 1 layer of sliced sharp cheddar cheese to increase the flavor. Other than that, I followed this recipe. Thanks Molson7 for a tasty recipe!

World's Best Lasagna

Reviewed: Aug. 7, 2012
Great recipe, John! I like my lasagna a little spicier, so I use either mild or hot Italian sausage. I also add about 1/2 t. crushed red pepper in the sauce. Even though I used to make a similar homemade sauce (my mom's recipe), to simplify this recipe because of time constraints, I now sub 3 or 4 jars of my favorite spag. sauce. This also eliminates the need for most of the spices that are included in this recipe. Absolutely no one has ever noticed the difference. Including my mother who gave me her recipe! I have had plenty of compliments from friends and family who enjoyed my simplified version. I do add sliced sharp cheddar cheese as one of the layers which I think adds greatly to the flavor. If I want to make 2-3 pans at a time, I use 1 1/2 - 2 boxes of unboiled lasagna noodles, plus 1 -2 extra jars of sauce, but leave the proportions of meat and ricotta cheese the same. I freeze additional pans unbaked and well-covered till I want to enjoy lasagna again. Much easier and oh, so good!

Sesame Pasta Chicken Salad

Reviewed: Aug. 13, 2011
Wow, what a delicious recipe! I subbed spaghetti strings for the bowtie pasta, used 1/4 c. light tasting extra virgin olive oil instead of veg. oil, and added some LaChoy Garlic Ginger Marinade to compensate for the oil. I thinly sliced a raw carrot to add crunchiness. I cut 2 ch. breasts into small pieces and panfried them. Left out the cilantro because I didn't have any. Next time, I'll add some cashews for more crunch as another reviewer suggested. Thanks for the recipe, Ohines!

Maple Syrup Taffy

Reviewed: Jul. 26, 2011
In NY state, on the Canadian border, we often made this tasty treat with "fake" maple syrup. We had heavy snow fall nearly every winter, so it was a familiar treat for my family. Brings back some great memories!

Chicken Enchilada Slow Cooker Soup

Reviewed: Jul. 26, 2011
I liked the sound of this soup, but I didn't have time to make it in my crockpot. Instead, I cubed the chicken breasts and put them in my pot with the chicken broth (plus 1 can of water), diced tomatoes, and enchilada sauce to simmer. I omitted the green chiles because my husband doesn't like them. I subbed some taco seasoning mix for the cumin, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. I left the cilantro and corn out because I didn't have them on hand. For toppings , we added shredded sharp ched. cheese and lowfat sour cream to our soup. Even my husband who doesn't like any spicy foods loved this soup! Way to go, AmberNPetty!

Triple Berry Crisp

Reviewed: Jul. 14, 2011
I follow this recipe exactly, but I chose to double the oatmeal topping because it didn't look like there would be enough for both a bottom and top crust. I made this while visiting my in-laws, and they loved it! I used fresh blueberries, and it was delicious! Thanks for a great recipe, Polly!

Dad's Hamburger Gravy

Reviewed: Jun. 25, 2011
I just made this today, and everyone in my family enjoyed the rich flavor! Instead of biscuits, which is traditional in the South, I added some pre-cooked bowtie pasta to the gravy. Very tasty, Rhonda. Next time, I may add a veggie to turn it into a complete meal. A new favorite!

Slow Cooker Bananas Foster

Reviewed: Jun. 18, 2011
Thanks for the terrific recipe, Jerry! I quickly added the ingredients to my crockpot, and I turned it on Low for an hour or so. I doubled the recipe to make enough for about 11 at my bunco group last night. They loved it, and I had some left over to add to butter pecan ice cream tonight. This recipe met all my needs: delicious, easy, and quick!

Whole Wheat Beer Bread

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2011
What more can you say about a bread that is delicious and takes very little prep time?! The only change I made was to melt 1/2 stick of margarine and pour it over the unbaked bread dough. The butter gave the crust a very rich and crunchy texture. I've made this several times because of its ease in putting it together. Thanks, BLChrisman!

Italian Sausage Soup with Tortellini

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2011
One of my new favorite soups! Even though I used diced canned tomatoes and dried herbs, I thought this soup was rich tasting. I mixed mild and hot sausage together to add a little more heat to the broth. I used a cheap red wine, and I don't think it made any difference in flavor. I also subbed 1 can tomato soup for the sauce because that's what I had. I used green beans instead of zucchini to save a trip to the store. Quick to put together and good enough for guests! Add some crusty French or Italian bread, and you've got a delicious meal for a cold nights' dinner. Thanks, Mary!

Margarita Cake

Reviewed: Aug. 22, 2010
Great flavor! I got a lot of compliments on the sweetness of this cake when I brought it to a family cookout. I was a little disappointed when I couldn't taste any of the tequila though. I subbed 2/3 c. orange juice for the water for extra flavor. Next time, I'll increase the tequila from 1/4 to 1/2 cup. I added 1/2 c. chopped pecans to the batter, and it was delicious! I may cut the amount of conf. sugar in the glaze the next time I make this cake. It was a little too sweet for me. I'll definitely be making this cake again!

Tart Lemon Ice Cream

Reviewed: Aug. 7, 2008
Oh yeah, this is the best lemon ice cream I'm sure I'll ever eat!! Instead of using a food processor, I grated the lemon zest on a hand grater. Much easier. I used the juice and zest from two lemons, and it was perfect. It was so good, in fact, that I didn't share with my family! They'll have to make their own ice cream...

Mom's Rum Cake

Reviewed: Oct. 12, 2007
Thanks Laura for sharing your Mom's very tasty rum cake! I mistakenly added the rum glaze to the bottom of the cake instead of the top. When I turned the cake upright onto a platter, I realized my mistake. I felt I should redeem myself by making more glaze for the top of the cake or no one would be able to taste the rum. Well, obviously doubling the glaze is not necessarily a bad thing, because I had more compliments on that cake than any other I've ever made! Several friends asked if they could take a slice home. I refrigerated my leftover slice and had it the next morning with my coffee. YUM! I liked it even better when it was cold. Yes, I'll be making this one again.

Grandma's Gingersnap Cookies

Reviewed: Oct. 12, 2007
Wow! These chewy spicy cookies were terrific! I followed the recipe closely, but I added 1/2 tsp. of nutmeg for more flavor. I chilled the cookie dough overnight, and they came out soft and chewy after baking. I took them to a church event, and everyone who tried one said they were delicious. Even my fussy son who prefers chocolate chip cookies liked these. He took all the leftover gingersnaps back to college with him. Yum!

Forgotten Party Cookies

Reviewed: Oct. 12, 2007
These cookies are an old favorite that I hadn't made in years. I followed the recipe pretty closely, but I added chocolate chips and almond extract to the cookies. I could taste the sweet crunchy flavor and texture of the cookies, but they were really too sweet for me. Next time, I may trying adding sifted cocoa to the recipe to increase the flavor and make it a little less sweet.

Apple Crisp II

Reviewed: Oct. 12, 2007
Thanks, Diane, for a delicious apple crisp! I did end up having to increase the butter when I spread the crumbly topping over the apples. Without the extra butter, it would have been too dry. Otherwise, it was very good. I cut the recipe down for just my husband and myself. My husband was very disappointed when he realized I had eaten the leftovers the next day. I guess I'd better make more the next time so we can both have seconds!

Hot Buttered Rum Mix

Reviewed: Oct. 12, 2007
I mixed up the butter and sugars together, and then I added it to the ice cream and froze it tightly in a container. I had already tasted the mixture and I thought it was delicious. I was very surprised when I added it to my coffee, both with and without the rum, and the flavor was very bland. I added more of the mixture to make it sweeter, but I was really disappointed especially after reading all the great reviews. Maybe I should have tried it in cocoa to increase the rich quality of the ice cream. Sorry, but I won't make this again...

Amish White Bread

Reviewed: Oct. 12, 2007
Terrific recipe, Peg! I mixed the bread dough in my bread machine and let it knead and rise and knead a second time. I then divided it into two loaf pans and let it rise again. My husband shared one loaf with his coworkers and they really enjoyed it. I really like the bread toasted, but you'll enjoy it however you choose to eat it!

Angel Chicken Pasta

Reviewed: Sep. 18, 2007
Terrific meal! I used plain cream cheese, added black olives, minced garlic, and mushrooms in addition to other ingredients. Softened cream cheese needs to be mixed well with melted butter or it tends to separate. I put chicken breasts in crockpot, covered with sauce, and it only took 2-3 hours on HIGH. The sauce was a little thin, so I may add more cream cheese next time. We ate it with fettucini and steamed broccoli. My husband and I both really enjoyed it. Thanks for the recipe!

Tomato Chicken Parmesan

Reviewed: Sep. 2, 2007
Delicious recipe, Alicia! I followed your recipe pretty closely, except at the end when I poured marinara sauce over the chicken and cheese slices. I would suggest using the whole jar of sauce since my husband wanted to mix the extra sauce with the fettucini that I also served. I only baked four chicken breasts, so I had plenty of sauce left over. Great served with steamed broccoli. This is a keeper!
