About this Cook
Not really much on baking but love to make recipes which are usually kept in my head so no two dishes of the same recipe come out the same. I rarely use boxed mixes and/or convenience foods. Most everything is done from scratch. There aren't enough boxes to check for everything that I like to do: Research and prepare good food, Read books and magazines, crochet, pets, collect dragons, fishing, play video games, church activities, web surfing with forum and web group participation and sometimes I sleep. (HA) 7/19/10>>>Have gotten into more baking lately. I especially like to make fruit cobblers and homemade breads (NOT with bread machine).
My favorite things to cook
I usually start everything with garlic, onions and mushrooms and go from there: along with pasta or rice: froglegs, all seafood, chicken and other poultry, sometimes lamb....rarely make beef and pork but enjoy them occasionally. I guess pasta and one of the seafoods are my favorite. I do enjoy putting together one-dish slow cooker meals.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Thanksgiving day is usually our annual family reunion day. Everyone makes a covered dish and meets at my aunt's house. We have family come in from all over the country. Turkey, oyster dressing, macaroni and cheese, veggies, salads, and desserts and enough food that would feed a small army.
My cooking triumphs
When microwave ovens first came out, I made an entire Thanksgiving meal via the microwave just to see if I could do it and have it taste and look like a traditional meal. The entree was duck. I spent more time on that meal than I've ever spent on any meal since. And it turned out great. But, belileve me, I've never tried it again. I still use the microwave for more than just 'heat-up' but just say no to duck.

Mexican Bean Salad
Instead of the cilantro (hate it) I use kale. Otherwise, I pretty much go with the recipe. Very good after it sits in the fridge a day or two.

Shrimp and Sugar Snap Peas
I make this frequently. Usually add mushrooms and onions and increase the amount of garlic. However, if I use this recipe I'll have to find the chili oil. I've looked in numerous grocers and have come up with nothing. Can someone tell me where to look for chili oil?

My mother introduced me to this recipe over 40 years ago. I've made it in several variations over the subsequent years. I like to add a few coins of kielbasa occasionally and vary the pastas.
