Honey, I Blew Up the Dog

Spring must really be here, because the pups are shedding. There are chunks of Maremma all over the back corrals, and I think Cletus may turn out to be only half the dog he used to be.
He looks so different and kinda mangy. The sheep woke up one morning and didn't even seem recognize him.

The chicks that have been living in the house since March 1st finally feathered out. One of them escaped from the big metal feed trough we had dragged into the living room for them to grow in, so I figgered it was high time. They were kinda stinky anyway, and chickens make a fine sort of dust on everything that is annoying. They moved into the greenhouse with the door unzipped so they could go in and out. They are becoming VERY friendly. We have had a few training sessions with Cletus who is still having a difficult time conquering his chicken plucking urges. We got Buff Orpingtons and Black Australorps this time around. They are supposed to be good about going 'broody' so they will be self sustaining and we will continue to have eggs and meat for the table without buying more chickens.

We had visitors, in the form of family last week. They brought 3 of the kids, who were really cute and had a good time helping to feed the calves, the lambs and milk goats. It was nice to have the help and, well...it was just nice having kids around. I miss my own kids and grandkids a LOT. Here's to hoping they make the trip up this summer, as they have another on the way!! Meantime, we had gone to the hot springs and one of the girls modeled the newest in ranchwear for  us.
How cute is a summer shift, stripped stockings with bows at the top and cowboy boots!?! I love kids. I wish I had this in my closet.

Once again, we ate like kings. They brought another prime rib, which I prepared while everyone was out pushing cows in from the desert. I had a panic attack, when I learned they were going to show up for dinner THREE HOURS LATE, but thanks to the recipe buzz on AR, (B'Nana in particular) it wound up cooked to perfection. The 'boule bucket bread' was also a major hit. If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend the book, "Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day". I tossed all the flour, yeast, salt and water into a bucket the day before they showed up and we had lots of fresh baked loaves and pizza crusts. FABULOUS stuff!
This discovery is NOT going to be a good for my wardrobe.

It's snowing again. I hope Cletus didn't jump the gun taking off his winter coat.

How cute - dog, chicks, and girl! I know missing those grandkids must be hard to deal with. Thank goodness you have two "clown" dogs to help out! BTW, what is boule bucket bread? Is it listed on AR site? sounds like my kinda bread dough!

Mamaw, its awesome stuff. The book has a few different recipes, but there is no proofing or kneading. You just dump it in the bucket, stir it up and let it sit. Anytime you want fresh bread for the next two weeks, you pull a chunk off. It made AWESOME pizza crust!

Hey Petey, love the chickens!

Hi Petey, I so admire those cowboy boots. I have mine from my childhood. My folks took me to the downtown Olympia Penneys store cuz I needed shoes. I was probably about 2 or 3 years old. My folks saw these cute little red cowboy boots, so instead of shoes, I got cowboy boots. They were worn by my sister and brother when they grew into them. They are mine now. When we moved to Maui, I had to get rid of almost everything. It is one of the few things I kept :) Thanks for the great blog.

Love your stories of life on the ranch. Wish I had a few of those chickens! Fresh eggs and bread what could be better?

From the looks of that first picture I thought you may have sheared the sheep. My dog, a black lab, should be bald for the amount of hair she looses. Fortunately, she only sheds once a year - Unfortunately shedding begins in January and ends in December. :)

Fresh dairy, Cat Hill! That makes it even better!

I had to laugh Petey. With that first pic I thought "It's snowing hair balls!" Boy - when your dogs shed, they SHED!!!! And I too would like the boule bucket bread recipe. I've never been good at bread making - but I'd like to try this one. Once again - a great blog and pics!

Thanks, Petey. I will be on the lookout for the book you suggested. I love to make bread, but often don't have time to do the advance prep. Bucket bread dough would be perfect!

You need a pizza peel and a baking stone to do the boule bread. If you want to email me, I will give you the instructions, its super easy. But I still recommend the book as it has lots of other bread recipes that are really awesome! This one tastes like a yummy chewy sourdough. Chewy crust and a real moist open crumb on the inside. MMMMMmmmmm! yetep@me.com

Thanks Petey - - I have one more question - - with your dinner being pushed back THREE HOURS - - how did you save that prime rib?

I turned the oven off when they called to tell me they were going to be late, cracked it open with a wooden spoon for 15 min, covered the roast with foil, then shut the oven again and left it in there. Worked perfectly! Brought it up to a perfect med rare in the middle. B'Nana clued me when I posted the SOS

Ahhh, I love the little girls fashion sense, doesn't get much cuter than that! I too miss my kids and grandkids! It is always nice when someone with little ones stops by. Thanks for sharing the photos~

Wow - - great save idea. Ok - next question - what temp were you cooking the roast and how long had it already been in the oven when you got the "delay dinner" call? Also one last question - - you said you posted an SOS - - was this on the regular blog area? or is this a different posting that supporting members have access to? Just curious as I just recently had a problem with getting my grits to thicken and would love to know how to get to this SOS posting. Thanks Petey - and I sent you an e-mail entitled "boule bread".

Sorry about the double post, my internet service is crazy so I had to resend and well now you get both~

luv2cook-It was a 12 lb rib roast I let come to room temp then put in @475 for 15 min then turned it down to 325. It was at about 129 degrees when I shut it off. It came to a little under 140 when they got here 3 hours later, in the cooled down oven. It could have been a disaster! and I got your email, I have been having probs sending. Stuff comes in, but won't go out!! eeek!

oh...and the SOS...I just posted a help message on the "recipe buzz" here on site. Lotta help out there!

Apr. 30, 2011 6:43 pm
Thanks Petey - great information - I may cook for a living - but most of the time it is in a controlled environment - so getting "SOS" information is valuable. BTW- that was a BIG prime rib roast - did you have a lot of people for dinner - or a lot of left overs? lol! Prime rib is my favorite - I know I'd have put a big dent in it! And any left overs would have been steak & eggs the next morning. Deeelicious!

It is shedding season isn't it? I used to have Samoyeds so I recognize those clumps of fur. Now it's cats and that is a gawdawful mess. I'll be glad when this is over. Love the idea of the bucket bread. So what do you do? Do you keep it refrigerated once made? I've never heard of such a thing but it's a great idea. My number 2 daughter, (Zvon) dressed like this her entire childhood and most definitely made a statement. I love that independent streak and self assured sense of self. They grow up like this too. :D

We had family visiting, there were about 10 of us, AND we had lots of left overs. I was having a panic attack because it was $100 chunk of beef THEY brought up and I was afraid I'd wreck it! LOL

yeah avon, after you mix it all up in the bucket, you let it sit out for a few hours till it rises and falls, then stick it in the fridge. I have a small bucket for sandwich bread in the fridge and a huge one for the sourdough/pizza crust etc in the walk-in :)

Petey - I must live a sheltered life - or I just don't take the time to navigate a website. After you told me about the "recipe buzz" - I found it on the homepage and visited it for the first time - - "oh my gosh" - - that's a whole other blog world there - lol!

I just love that little girl's outfit. Reminds me of my oldest daughter. When she was four, she had a pair of waffle stompers. Remember those? She also had a purple lace dress which she loved to wear backwards so the zipper showed. She wore the purple lace dress (on backwards) with the waffle stompers every day. Drove me nuts, but you gotta let them do it their way. Love those preddy Black Australorps. I've got two buffs in my herd. Can't wait for them to start laying.

Petey: Gosh, those puppy dogs should win an award for that kind of shedding! I remember the day you sent the SOS about your prime rib. Not surprising that BN had the perfect solution. Glad to hear it turned out well.

LOL! I kind of wish mine would shed once a year and get it over with. Seems like I'm always brushing off or sweeping up enough fur to make another dog (or cat for that matter), and I love the little girls sense of fashion!

I thought you were shearing sheep when I saw the first picture. I have 2 black cats who shed constantly. If I could figure out a use for cat hair I could make a fortune. That little cutie is adorable and tres chic. Thanks for sharing.

My neighbor's have these clumps all over the house, even behind the couch. My rotties have black hairs rubbed into the carpet. When I vacuumed earlier, it changed from dingy grey carpet to the lovely beige.

Short-coated dogs are short haired because it falls out before it has time to grow! My pups look 30 lb lighter this week!

May 3, 2011 5:15 am
Aw petey, your blogs always bring a smile to my face! When my old gray mare sheds out, I swear I could stuff a mattress with all that hair. Lots of good fodder for birds nests. The pullets look good, my Orpingtons were perpetually broody, but only one of my Australorps ever wanted anything to do with bein' a mama! So glad you are enjoying the springtime!

May 3, 2011 11:06 am
is that even possible? are you joking about blowing up your dog?

Ooooh I used to have collies and I remember SO well this time of year when they started shedding the "underbrush"! Great post...Artisan bread in 5 minutes a day? That sounds awesome! I will order that book today! Thanks again for the great read!

As my late wonderful dad always said about our Siberian Husky, "She only sheds twice a year...January to June and then July to December." Love your blogs, petey! Thank you for brightening my day! =D

Love the sheep!! Makes me miss my own that I had when I was living in Michigan. Two friends of mine raise Samoyed for show, and she saves all her doggie fuzz for a mutual friend to clean, card, and spin into yarn. Lori knitted herself a vest out of the resulting yarn, and claims she cannot wear it unless the ambient temperature is lower than -10 F outside! This fuzz is WARM!! Imagine these dogs in the heat of the summer... Yuck!!

About Me
Kids are raised, we are ranchhands on a 250,000 acre working cattle ranch 110 miles from the nearest small town, so we raise a lot of our own food, vegetables, fruits, milk, eggs and meat. Love riding and working cattle, but find myself spending a lot more time in the kitchen, and the garden. forpeteysake.blogspot.com http://throughthedarkestvalleys.blogspot.com/
My favorite things to cook
Having 2 Jersey cows as well as milk goats, playing with fresh milk is a hobby, making our own butter, yogurt, sour cream, cheeses, soap and all the other great stuff you can do with fresh raw milk.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Homemade from scratch...anything! All traditions are sort of gone by the wayside, as we live so far from family now
My cooking triumphs
Most things from this site, this has been the best thing the internet has had to offer!
My cooking tragedies
A layered Jello dessert...the middle layer never set, so it did the 'ooze-wiggle'...and...well..I liquified a couple of chickens on 2 different occasions, turning them into a black gel. Moral of that story is, don't start cooking then go clean barns!...and there was the time that my kids were helping me make Thanksgiving dinner and SOMEbody (who resembled my youngest son) forgot to put the sugar in the pie!!!
