Peruvian Lomo Saltado

Reviewed: May 9, 2014
Maybe it was because I used frozen french fries, but it's not like any lomo saltado I've ever had. I've done this recipe a couple of times--some with the modifications that are in other reviews, but it still doesn't taste right to me. This last time, my husband and I added way more soy sauce (closer to actual flavour), then we added stir fry sauce (and that really helped quite a bit!!). I'm a little disappointed, and I must say, I'm still waiting for the right lomo saltado recipe to come.

Stuffed Peppers

Reviewed: Feb. 14, 2014
Made this for my family today and we really liked it. My hubs and I both thought that the Italian seasoning should have been mixed in with the meat (that would have given it 5 stars for us). We also sauteed 1/4 onion in a bit of butter, and added the ground beef to that (and omitted the onion powder). I probably should have used fresh garlic as well--maybe next time. And I drained the grease from the meat before mixing the beef+onions with the rice. I topped off the peppers with Mozzarella cheese, and did not add the last 8 oz of tomato sauce. Will definitely make again!!

Picnic Potato Salad with No Mayonnaise

Reviewed: Sep. 1, 2013
I'm not a fan of potato salad, and my husband hates mayo, but this was amazing and mayo-free. I made it the night before a party we were bringing it to(boiled potatoes for 9 min), and mixed in everything except the chives, (feta) cheese, and walnuts--which I did when I brought it to the party I made it for. It was a hit! Will definitely keep this recipe!!

Fresh Tomato Basil Sauce

Reviewed: Aug. 26, 2013
Made this one for the first time after trying two other tomato sauce recipes (that didn't turn out as well as I thought they would). This one is the winner! I'm not sure if I had three pounds of tomatoes, nor am I sure if it's supposed to weight 3 lbs after seeding them, but I had a bunch of them from my crop share (along with fresh basil) and wanted to get rid of them. I also made it using a slow cooker on low and left it over night. It smells absolutely divine and I can't wait to have it for dinner tonight!!

Banana Sour Cream Bread

Reviewed: Feb. 24, 2013
Wow! I usually hate banana bread, but I LOVE this recipe! I follow SaraLady19's suggestions with the temp at 325 for 1 hr, 10 mins, and the Zucchini Bread IV crumble recipe. This results in the most delicious banana bread I could imagine. I've made this for my friends and neighbours, and they're always asking me for more! I'm only too happy to oblige because this recipe usually makes 2 big loaves and two mini loaves. Thanks so much for sharing!!!

Cranberry Orange Bread

Reviewed: Feb. 24, 2013
My husband and I loved this. It tasted more like poundcake than bread, but it was still delicious. Next time I'll try to use fresh cranberries instead of dried cranberries (although I did soak them in hot water to try and plump them up a bit!). I think I may try to make them as muffins as well by using cake flour and by whipping the egg whites, folding it into the recipe, and then adding in the yolks. Can't wait to make this again!

Herb Roasted Pork

Reviewed: Feb. 17, 2013
Delicious. I've never attempted to make a pork roast before, and I'm very glad I came across this recipe. Made this for my friends and hubby and everyone loved it! It turned out super moist and the flavours were extraordinary. I used apple cider vinegar and almost doubled the amount of herbs. I had a 2 lbs roast in the oven for 2 hours and 15 minutes before drizzling the glaze on (I didn't want to chance scraping off the herbs.) And I did that once every ten minutes for the last half hour. Anyway, it was perfect. I can't wait to make this for a larger family gathering! Thanks so much for sharing!

Awesome Sausage, Apple and Cranberry Stuffing

Reviewed: Feb. 15, 2013
I made this last night for my friends and hubby. Everyone loved it! The only changes I made were using premade stuffing bread (I think an herbed one), beef broth instead of turkey broth, sweet Italian pork sausage, and no liver. It really was amazing and I can't wait to make it again. I was worried that it would be too mushy, so I only used 1/2 cup of broth--this was a mistake (especially with the premade bread). I highly recommend this! Thanks for sharing!

Spiced Chickpeas (Chole)

Reviewed: Dec. 3, 2012
Wow. Fantastic. Served this with Curried Coconut Chicken from this website and the two were fantastic together!! (Not to mention a side of white rice and rainbow sherbet for dessert!!) Had my friend and her family over and everyone loved it--she even asked me for the recipe! My husband thought it was perfect. This will definitely be made over and over again! Thanks for the amazing share!! Oh, I didn't use either of the chiles--I'm not a huge fan. I did use some red pepper (about 1/2 tspn) which was just the right amount of kick for me. Otherwise, followed the recipe and everything was delicious!

Spanish Rice II

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2012
This recipe, with some minor changes mostly suggested by other reviewers, is fantastic! Some additional changes I made were: used olive oil instead of vegetable oil, used 2 stalks of celery thinly cut (since I didn't have onion), 1/2 tspn onion powder, 2 cups of chicken broth, and red bell pepper instead of green bell pepper. Also, I used 1/2 tbsp of chili powder since spicy food makes me queasy even though I love spicy food! Sadly, this was a little spicy for me, but I still loved it, as did my hubby! Will definitely make this again (with maybe a not as spicy version for myself). Thanks for sharing!

Slow Cooker Pulled Pork

Reviewed: Oct. 8, 2012
Just made this for dinner tonight and both my hubby and I liked it a lot. I used 1/3 of a bottle of bbq sauce, since I thought a whole 18 ounces would be too much, but it really needed some extra. 1/3 of a bottle might be too little, next time I might do 1/2 a bottle or so--a full bottle still seems too much. Next time I may add some paprika or garlic. I let it sit for 5.5 hours in the Root Beer and an extra hour in the bbq. I love slow cooker recipes and this one will definitely be a keeper. Thanks for the share!

Sour Cream Waffles

Reviewed: Oct. 8, 2012
I made this for my husband's birthday when I couldn't find the one his mum had given us. I was a little worried he wouldn't like it as much, but he thought it was better than his mum's recipe! The waffles were great! Thicker than our normal recipe, so we'll set our temperature higher next time (I think it was set on medium heat before). Oh, and I didn't have yogurt (since my hubby doesn't like it) so I used 3/4 cup sour cream and 1/4 cup milk. My mum even liked it as well and she's not a huge waffle fan. :) Will definitely make again!

Hot and Sour Chicken Soup

Reviewed: Sep. 21, 2012
My husband loved this--and he's super picky about hot and sour soup! I kept everything the same, except I added half the red pepper--spicy food and I don't mix. It had enough kick for me, and I would definitely make this again (with a mild version for me and a hot version for my hubby!). Next time, I'll look for shiitake mushrooms instead of baby bella mushrooms. Glad I gave this a go!

Bake Sale Lemon Bars

Reviewed: Sep. 9, 2012
This is four stars for the changes GOURMETMOMMY mentioned, since most reviewers tended to go with her suggestions. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't as amazing as I hoped they would be. Maybe it's because I only have whole wheat flour and I only used 1.5 cups of lemon juice (I ran out), and I didn't douse the top with tons of confectioners' sugar--I added a thin layer to it, which was absorbed by the filling part and did not end up looking like the picture; I'm just not sure. I think if I make it again, I shall use some actual lemons to get some pulp in there, and maybe not use whole wheat flour. Still good, just not perfect.

Scalloped Potatoes and Onions

Reviewed: Aug. 28, 2012
Just made this for dinner tonight and it was pretty good. My hubby and I give it four stars instead of five because it was not quite as crispy as we were hoping it would be. I made the mistake of not reading enough reviews that suggested cooking at a higher temperature for less time. I'll also uncover it for maybe 20 minutes or so. I did add some chili powder to it (1/2 tspn) and I used beef cubes instead of chicken broth (didn't have any). Will make it again!! Great starter recipe!

Chicken Pot Pie IX

Reviewed: Aug. 22, 2012
Fantastic!! My husband and I devoured this, and we can't wait to have our leftovers! Took other reviewer's advice with baking the bottom crust for 5 minutes, we also sort of doubled everything for the sauce, except I was a half cup short of the chicken broth. It didn't matter as there was still a ton of sauce (enough for leftovers--maybe to use as gravy on mashed potatoes?) Anyway, I didn't add salt either (I figure people can always add salt if they want it--I find the broth to usually make up for it). Will make again!!! Many times!!!

Slow Cooker Teriyaki Pork Tenderloin

Reviewed: Aug. 19, 2012
I made this last night, and my hubby and I were going to originally give it 4 stars, but we had leftovers today and this is unbelievably delicious! The reason for the 4 stars was the pork was a little tougher than we would have liked it. Some changes I had made: we used beef broth instead of chicken (since it was what we had), and we didn't precook it, and I did double the sauce. It did stay in the crock pot for about 5 hours (so maybe that's why it was tough). But the leftovers--holy cow, five stars! The meat was so tender (literally falling apart), and it was so infused with the teriyaki, that I wish we had more! We served it with Spanish rice. Can't wait to make this one again for dinner with my family and in-laws! Next time I may add some mushrooms, carrots, and green onions as well!

Curried Coconut Chicken

Reviewed: Aug. 12, 2012
Wow. Absolutely delicious! As others suggested, I mixed the oil and curry for 5 minutes, then added in and mixed the onions for about 10 minutes. Once the chicken was done I added in freshly sliced tomatoes and some yellow squash and just one tablespoon of sugar. And I ended up using some garden vegetable pasta sauce instead of tomato sauce. Everything was so good, and the smell was so aromatic and soothing, it was a wonderful dining experience. There's a ton of sauce, and while we didn't have any Naan, I served it with rice and some bread. Will make this so many more times!! Thank you so much for this amazing recipe! Probably one of my AllRecipe favourites!

Chili-Lime Chicken Kabobs

Reviewed: Jul. 11, 2012
I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5 because the chili powder was a little too overpowering for me...however, I used white vinegar instead of red wine vinegar and I'm wondering if that made much difference. I could still taste the hint of lime (delicious) and I did end up using about a 1/2 teaspoon of salt as another reviewer suggested. This is a fantastic find and I will make it again although I'll cut the amount of chili powder I add. Thanks!
