If I had to eat one thing for the rest of my life it would be beef jerky. I am more than in love with beef jerky. I think I was eating it in the womb :)
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook all sorts of things. Soups and stews seem to be my specialty...maybe because I love to eat them so much! There is just something about stews/soups...or as Rachael Ray calls them, "stoups"...that are so comforting to me.
While I like to spread the love around in my cookbooks, I do like to try out more gourmet or "fancier" recipes a lot. It makes me feel empowered to make a difficult meal with tough techniques and actually pull it off. Nothing makes me feel better than cooking something more advanced and having my hubby tell me that it tastes great. That is so rewarding :)
My favorite family cooking traditions
I think one of my favorite cooking traditions is our yearly St. Patrick's Day breakfast at Aunt Betty and Uncle Dave's house. While I don't get to participate every year (since I now live out of state), the years that I do visit for Paddy's are always an event. Aunt Betty is up making her "Green Breakfast" with the sunrise. Anything that she can turn green with food coloring...she will :) Our whole family piles into their house and it's full of noise and ruccus, but it is the only time I enjoy being up that early in the morning. SO. MUCH. FUN.
My cooking triumphs
My first flambe was a pretty awesome thing for me. I had my husband on standby with the extinguisher just in case but all went swimmingly. And then meal turned out delicious! I was pretty proud of myself.
My cooking tragedies
While making Cream of Crab Soup (the one in my recipe box actually!) the Hollendaise packets were either old or I did it wrong, but whatever the case, the contents of the package clumped up and stuck to the bottom of the pot. It started to burn on the bottom of the stockpot so I turned off the burner, strained the soup (what I had made of it so far), and scratched out all the burnt hollendaise packet from the bottom of the pot. Luckily, I had all the ingredients to make hollendaise from scratch and proceeded to do just that. After that everything actually turned out fabulous! And everyone at my work party raved about my soup!
