Sam's Famous Carrot Cake

Reviewed: Mar. 6, 2012
This was great! Only change I made was to omit the nuts (don't like them). Otherwise, what a fantastic cake. The first time I have ever made carrot cake, which has always seemed so intimidating. Now I plan to use this recipe all the time -- thanks for posting it!

Annemarie's Lemon Bars

Very good. I made exactly as the recipe stated and found the balance b/w the crust and the topping to be just fine.

Seminary Muffins

Reviewed: Sep. 26, 2011
Way too salty. I used one teaspoon (the recipe calls for even more -- 1 and 1/4) and as I bit into the first muffin -- whoa!!! -- talk about a salt hit. The texture was good, the other flavours were nice, but if I make again, I will cut the salt down to about 1/2 tsp.

German Apple Cake I

Reviewed: Aug. 9, 2011
I made this as written, didn't change anything. It was okay -- the best thing I can say about it is that you probably have all the ingredients on hand. The end result was kind of flat, and got a bit mushy by the second day. Flavour-wise I had no complaints, but as a "cake" it didn't really work. More like apple bars (which I ended up serving with ice cream).

Award Winning Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Jul. 19, 2011
Disappointing. Will not make again. These cookies are too cake-like and the pudding adds an artificial flavour. Blech.

Rhubarb-Raspberry Crunch

Reviewed: Jun. 19, 2011
Very good -- would make again. I halved the recipe and made it in an 8x8 pan. Not too runny, sweet, but not overly so. Other than halving, I followed the recipe exactly.

Marshmallow Fondant

Reviewed: Jun. 13, 2011
My first experience with fondant. It went surprisingly well, thanks to this recipe. I followed exactly (but halved it). If you are making this and don't have a mixer, no problem. I did it all by hand (in small batches, dyed different colours) and it was fine. I will use this recipe again for my next decorating project.

Broccoli Chicken Divan

Reviewed: Jun. 6, 2011
Pretty good, but probably would look for another recipe before making this again. A little bit too salty, and it lacked some sort of carb to anchor the dish. I could see serving with rice, I suppose. I served on toast, which was fine.

Chocolate Banana Bread Pudding

Reviewed: May 19, 2011
Way too chocolatey and gooey. I made this using just 1/3 of the sugar suggested and it was still over the top. I served it to three kids aged 5 to 9 and they only ate half of their servings. Not great, I won't make again. The only upside was that I got to use my over-ripe bananas.

Banana Oat Muffins

Easy to make and quite good, with the addition of 1/2 cup of chocolate chips. The batter actually yielded 18 muffins. I would make this again.

Sizzling Sherry Shrimp with Garlic

Reviewed: Apr. 25, 2011
Made this with scallops. It was okay, but nothing special. The taste of the sherry didn't really come through, nor that of the garlic. The red pepper flakes seemed to steal the show, and not in a good way. Surprised that this recipe is supposedly from Spain (where I lived for more than a decade) as it was quite spicy (and I know how most Spaniards feel about the "p" word (ie. picante).

Apple Bavarian Torte

Reviewed: Apr. 25, 2011
This was excellent -- would highly recommend it. The only change I made was to follow the advice of others and sub almond extract for the vanilla in the crust. Plus I cut the butter in with a pastry cutter, rather than creaming. Anyway, the presentation was great, as was the taste. Will definitely make again and again.

Rhubarb Sour Cream Pie

This was good. I screwed up on the crust, but that certainly isn't the fault of this recipe. The sour cream custard was very nice and balanced the tartness of the rhubarb.

Sour Cream Coffee Cake I

Reviewed: Feb. 1, 2011
Pretty good. I liked the ribbon of sugar and cinnamon in the middle. A bit dry, though. Probably best if consumed same day as baking. I followed the recipe exactly, except for the icing, which I only made half of (more than enough).

Cranberry Pistachio Biscotti

Reviewed: Jan. 4, 2011
I used butter instead of olive oil, and they turned out fine. The yield was smaller than the recipe stated, but I was sort of expecting that. These make a nice little Christmas present, but are enough of a pain that I wouldn't make them just for myself and family.

Ash-e-jow (Iranian/Persian Barley Soup)

Reviewed: Nov. 14, 2010
I wanted to like this... It had been in my recipe for ages before I actually got around to making it. I made it for an Iranian friend, and although we both liked it enough to eat it, it is unfortunately not something that I would make again. The taste was okay, I followed the recipe exactly. In terms of texture, a bit thick, but thinning it out would not have improved it much. I guess it was just kind of monotonous to eat, spoonful after spoonful. Lacked something essential, but I am nevertheless glad that I finally made it. Oh well!

Crispy Rosemary Chicken and Fries

Reviewed: Nov. 12, 2010
Very good. I didn't have red potatoes on hand, and just used white ones. They turned out a bit mushy, so next time I'll try the red. The chicken was great! I used bone-in breasts with skin and they turned out incredibly moist and flavourful. Will make again.

Paul's Pumpkin Bars

Reviewed: Oct. 12, 2010
The reviews that say that this is more of a cake than bars are right. But the recipe was still very good -- I would definitely make again. The only change I made was to add 1/2 cloves and reduce salt by half. The icing was delicious!

Tiramisu II

Reviewed: Oct. 5, 2010
Very nice. I followed recipe exactly, except I doubled the rum/coffee. Very expensive recipe -- I won't be in a hurry to make this one again! I just used the standard "hard" ladyfinger cookies, which worked fine.
