Holiday Cranberry Sauce

Reviewed: Dec. 13, 2007
This year is the first time I made my own 'stewed' whole cranberries for Thanksgiving (as opposed to the gelatinous mass from a can :). I used Splenda instead of real sugar, but I think I needed a little more than I used. This is a good recipe, but oddly, it was a little bland. (Seems strange to write that since cranberries are so tangy.) Next time I might try adding orange or lemon juice or zest like I read in some of the other recipes on this site and give it a slightly more multi-dimensional flavor.

Strawberry Spinach Salad I

Reviewed: Dec. 13, 2007
I made this recipe for a company picnic this summer, and I've never handed out a recipe after the fact as often as I've handed this one out. The tang of the balsamic vinegar was a perfect offset to the sweetness of the strawberries... it was very good!

Sweet Potato Casserole VI

Reviewed: Dec. 13, 2007
I have never made sweet potatoes for Thanksgiving in my entire life, until this year. My boyfriend wanted some kind of sweet potato side dish, so I pulled up my trusty Allrecipes link and found this one. I *highly* recommend this recipe. The potatoes were awesome and were the hit of the entire dinner! They are so sweet and creamy smooth, it was almost like eating dessert instead of a side dish. I mixed up the potatoes and put them in the slowcooker on low heat while the turkey was roasting, about 6 or 7 hours. When the turkey was done, I topped the potatoes with the brown sugar/pecan topping and put the crock in the oven to finish it off - 350 degrees for about 20 minutes. Every person at the table asked for a little doggy bag to take with them (and I had plenty to give away, since I doubled the recipe). I might cut back on the amount of sugar used next time I make this recipe because it was so sweet.

Fudgy Brownies

Reviewed: Dec. 13, 2007
These brownies turned out FAN-TAS-TIC!! They were so moist and chewy, and they were the perfect balance between chocolate cake and chocolate fudge. The experts (my 4 kids!) loved them, too, so I'll be storing this recipe as my new favorite. The only change I made is that I omitted the nuts. (Not by my choice - why do kids dislike nuts??) Next time I'll make half the pan nutty and the other half nut-less for them! :)

Chewy Peanut Butter Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 13, 2007
These were tasty, and I added a little crunch by using crunchy peanut butter. I had some issues with melted butter that caused my cookies to be flat as paper, though. I've since learned that dry cookie dough bakes puffy and wet cookie dough bakes flat - it all has to do with the moisture content from butter and eggs. I'll try this recipe again.

Banana Cream Pie I

Reviewed: Dec. 2, 2007
This recipe was so easy to make, and was a huge hit for a birthday party! I highly recommend this. A quick swap of coconut (instead of banana), or any other fruit would make a wonderful alternate pie. For those users who ended up with a soupy mess: Be SURE to use at least 2% or preferably whole milk to make a perfectly thick custard. This recipe cannot be 'healthified' by cutting back to skim or fat free milk (sorry! :).

Real Italian Calzones

Reviewed: Mar. 5, 2007
This was the first time I tried making homemade dough, and it was very easy! Don't let that scare you off. We made several kinds of calzones, but our favorite was stuffed with orange and yellow bell pepper, Italian sausage and pepperoni. Experiment with different varieties when you make this - and make enough to freeze... these make a wonderful day-after lunch!

Restaurant-Style Potato Skins

Reviewed: Feb. 6, 2007
Worth the time to make these... of the five appetizers I made for my party, these went the fastest! I added a sprinkle of green onion on the top for a little extra pizzaz.

Restaurant-Style Buffalo Chicken Wings

Reviewed: Feb. 6, 2007
We made these 'boneless' with bite-sized chicken breast nuggets, and they were a huge hit at our party! Make plenty, they'll go fast!
