as Nestle says ... Baking Some Love.

When I received December's activities for Allrecipes Allstars, "Cookies Across America" was the #1 activity. I understood "Cookies Across America" to be a sharing activity ... an activity in which one baked and shared goodies or gave those baking ingredients to another less fortunate. Simply stated it was an activity of giving. Nestle gave by giving to the Allstar group coupons to receive two bags of their chips for baking as well as a beautiful and much needed apron. Thank you Nestle.
The #2 activity was to bake Jumbo Dark Chocolate Cookies and Original Nestle Toll House Dark Chocolate Chip Cookies which were both delicious and baked up beautiful and that I was proud to package in pretty holiday tins along with FUNKYSEAMONKEY's Best Toffee Ever-Super Easy to give.<<<

"Until one has loved an animal a part of one's soul remains unawakened".
Anatole France

Near and dear to my heart are the people who care for and help animals. Some rescue, some give medical care, some fight for their rights, some lend a helping hand in various and many ways and some are there when we say good-bye, for now. All, in their own way, are dedicated to helping. On December 7th I lost my little girl Amber who I rescued 5 years earlier. Amber was dumped in a park to live happy-ever-after. A tiny 3.5 pound bunny discarded after Easter because she no longer served a purpose. Easter was over and so was her relationship with her humans. I took Amber in after being contacted by the rabbit rescue group I support. "Can you please take a rabbit in ... I'm full and this rabbit was found in your area and the people caring for her really don't know how and they are desperate to get her with someone who does". It was an easy decision and I became a foster mom. Fostering was not something I was good at because Amber never left. At the time I brought her in I had another bunny but Amber soon found her way deep into my heart. I could write for a long time about those 5 years ... I could. My Bams was perfect and very much adored.

When Amber passed I wanted her privately cremated and called Pet Meadow (a companion pet memorial park and crematory) to make the arrangements. Every person who works there shows respect and kindness for both animal and human but most touching is the unspoken understanding, the understanding of the animal and human bond. It was those people that I chose to share with. Those whose compassion and understanding is genuine and real and also to thank them for what they do for animals so that they too receive final dignity here on earth. This was not my first visit to Pet Meadow and it will not be my last and I thought it time I went back without reason.
"Cookies Across America" is a wonderful campaign and one I intend to participate in during other random times of the year now for no particular reason.

My little girl Amber. Forever in my heart, forever a part of my soul, forever loved.

I'm sorry for the loss of your Amber. We've had some bunnies as pets over the years -the most memorable one was Bouncer, a huge gray and white rabbit that was more like a cat than a rabbit. We had a mansion of a hutch for Bouncer outside. One day we came home and our neighbor greeted us with the story that she had looked across to our yard and saw Bouncer eating clover in the yard. She ran over and tried to catch him, but Bouncer was enjoying his newfound freedom way too much. She said it took her 20 minutes to finally catch Bouncer and get him back in the cage. I love your quote in your blog - just this morning as I sat drinking my coffee with my old chocolate lab by my side, I commented to my husband how lonely some people's lives must be without any animals to love! And, I'm not very good at fostering either. I tried that with a starved and neglected dog. I promised my husband I was simply fattening her up and finding her a good home. She lived with us for over 12 years. Nice blog!

Thank you Mother Ann ... it wasn't easy to write and I tried to keep it to a point. I wish you many more quality years with your puppy (they forever are) and always by your side.

I saw the pictures from my left to right and went Oh how pretty! to oooohhhh. Years ago a story was ran in the KC paper about the very same thing, people buy bunnies for Easter and then toss them out. I understand rabbits are some of the neatest pets to have and I'm afraid I wouldn't have been a good foster mom either. I've had my share of homeless cross my door and my avatar is one who came and never left either. I do believe your quote is so right, animals are definitely good for the soul even if they leave us way too soon.

I just wanted to add condolences to you with your loss of Amber. I've had various pets over the course of time, some are just extra special and close to your heart. The picture you chose shows a sweet little face-she obviously had a wonderful life with her loving mom. I wish you & your family a very peaceful season.

What a lovely way to share hoiday goodies. We animal people love our 4 legged kids almost as much as our 2 legged ones. I was fostering both my "girls." BigShot has been here 15 years now and Lulu 6. I guess I'm not good at it either. I could not imagine a home without an animal. My condolences.

About Me
I love looking at and collecting recipes and have been doing so since I was a kid. Everytime I came across something someone made that I enjoyed I would ask for the recipe. I have a nice collection now and sometimes find it funny looking at a recipe that I thought was so good or intersting then and thinking now "I liked that?".
My favorite things to cook
Homemade pizza with fresh homemade dough. My next favorite is a pot of "Sunday" sauce and meatballs. I love how good my home smells while it's cooking and love dipping hunks of crusty bread into the sauce for a taste.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Stuffing for a holiday turkey. You just can't top homemade stuffing.
My cooking triumphs
Roasting a turkey. I was always intimidated. I didn't roast a turkey until several years ago and to my surprise it came out great. A girlfriend from work taught me. Made turkey soup with the leftovers and again surprised myself because it was delicious. I never knew homemade turkey soup could be so good.
My cooking tragedies
I've had enough but at least learned.
