I recently bought steel cut oatmeal, only to find out that I don't like it. So I found this recipe and figured I could use the oatmeal up this way. I wasn't sure if it would work for oatmeal cookies because it isn't instant oatmeal, but given this is a WWII recipe, I'm guessing they didn't have instant oatmeal back then either. I was pleasantly surprised. The steel cut oatmeal lent itself to a cookie with a bit more crunch, yet still being chewy.

Cheese Fondue

A hit at my friend's party. Not a recipe for the impatient; it took me about 15 minutes of stirring to make sure it all melted properly, without burning. But well worth the effort. I used fuji apples, pears, and potato rosemary bread to go along with it.

Very rich and spicy recipe. Very good. Only problem I had was that it took longer to cook than the recipe called for.

Berry Soup

A good soup, but it's very sweet. Use a lot less sugar so that you're not eating so much sugar for your breakfast.

Groovy Green Smoothie

Who knew eating your veggies could taste so good?! I'm excited to find that I can add some veggies here and there to my smoothies without ending up with a virgin Bloody Mary. (Now THAT'S no fun!). I'm not giving this one 5 stars because I think this is a two step process if you have a crappy generic blender like mine. I had to transfer everything to the food processor to get it going. It ended up a bit gritty, so next time I'll finish it off in the blender. Could have been the skin on the apple, but I'll leave that on next time too, because that's where a lot of the fiber comes into play.

Mawmenye (Lentils and Beef Stew)

A little on the sweet side. I would reduce the amount of raisins and also chop the figs into very small pieces. For some reason, my meat turned out a bit too chewy, even though I followed the directions to a T. Perhaps next time I would shorten the browning time in the pan. That being said, it's an interesting twist on stew and has lots of great flavor.

Autumn Muffins

Too boring with all that flour. Perhaps add some wheat germ or cornmeal for a more interesting taste. Also, it would be better to grate the apples so that they help keep the muffins moist all over, rather than just have chunks in them.
