This super-easy side dish utilizes the bounty of late summer and is the perfect companion to whatever you are grilling - in fact, the stove can be turned on while the meat is resting from the grill. The sweet acidity of the berries balances the entire meal, and the fresh oregano brings out the best of both the berries and the beans. It's a beautiful, unusual side dish that leaves guests, and even finicky family, raving.

My mother made this pie so often she could do it with her eyes closed! We picked the berries ourselves, and the apples came from the trees in our orchard. I can still taste the delicious combination of fruits encased in Mother's flaky pie crust.

I REMEMBER going blackberry picking with Mom and Grandma. Even at 70 years old, Grandma could pick 3 gallons of berries before I had my pail half full. Grandma made up this recipe with her mom, and it's been passed down for five generations now. -Diana Martin, Moundsville, West Virginia

Deep-Dish Blackberry Pie

I THINK BACK to 1942 when I make this dessert. We grew extra large and juicy blackberries that year, and Mother canned 400 quarts. For years, whenever we went home to visit, Mother brought up jars of blackberries from the cellar and treated us to the best cobblers, jam cakes or jam in the world. -Dorothy Lilliquist, Brooklyn Center, Minnesota
