Buttermilk is as common in the South as iced tea. This old-fashioned pie is just another fine way to cook with it. It's one of my favorites.

A simple formula of one accounts for everything in this delicious pie. There 's one egg, one cup of raisins, one cup of buttermilk, one cup of sugar and one pinch of salt. Stir together, pour into a pie shell, cover with a second crust, and bake. It 's one heck of a pie.

Whenever I bake this pie, I think of the days of the Depression. Meat was hard to come by then, so Grandma Meg would tell my dad, 'If you go hunt for a rabbit or peasant for Sunday dinner, I'll make a raisin pie.' We had lot of wild game and raisin pies during those days!

A lovely, sour cream and raisin filling is sandwiched between two layers of sweetened cream cheese that 's topped with whipped topping. The pie is then slipped into the fridge to chill and firm up. For some variation, try adding some dried cranberries along with the raisins.
