It does need some carrots, garlic, celery and broth. I had some ham broth I'd frozen and I picked up a Honey Baked Ham bone. Threw in a bay leaf, and two slices of chopped bacon, and this made a really fantastic soup! I don't believe it would have had the really rich flavor without the things that I added.

Perfect! Added a couple spices recommended in other reviews (bay leaf, parsley, chicken broth, oregano, diced garlic to cook in the last minute when sauteeing onions, and coriander) and also put 1/2 the split peas in 3 hrs after the start when I slow cooked it in the crock for a better texture. Yum!

Delicious! This was my first time making split pea soup and it turned out great. The ham bone and leftover ham made the soup plenty salty, so be sure to let it cook thoroughly before adding extra seasoning.

Added chopped potato and some bacon,as i felt I didn't have enough ham pieces. I also added a cup of chicken broth. Anyway, it was delish, and finally thickened up the next day!

Love this simple recipe. Nice comfort food after a holiday. we are always saving the ham bone for this dish. Sometimes I will add a little onion powder. But it does not need anything. Perfect recipe

I made this today in my slow cooker for 6.5 hrs as another reviewer suggested. Holy moly this stuff is amazing! I used chicken stock instead of water and added some garlic as well. Delish!

Very yummy! My ham bone was larger then what was stated on the recipe so it needed more water to cover it. Because of the extra water, a little salt was needed but added towards the end. Also, some onion powder pepper, and a little adobo. Additional bag of peas would have been nice and I will do next time. I also added some potato's to thicken it up because my husband likes a thicker soup. It was a nice touch but will try it without next time. I will also not add the carrots as early as I did the next time. They became too mushy. All in all, a very yummy soup and I will highly recommend.
