Simple Scones Recipe Reviews - Allrecipes.com (Pg. 7)
Reviewed: Dec. 8, 2012
This recipe is simply the best scone recipe out there. The scones come out slightly moist, and not dry like a certain large Seattle-based coffee shop's scones. I don't even bother with freezing and grating the butter. Just throw it in the bowl cold and work it with a pastry cutter until the mix looks sandy. My husband LOVES these, and I usually make at least one batch every weekend. They don't last through Sunday, though (because he and my 2-year-old go through them so quickly). All variations are wonderful, but my favorite so far is the cherry almond. My husband prefers chocolate chip. Even if you don't usually like scones, try this recipe. It's hard to go wrong here!

Love these - they are just like the ones my Nana used to make (unfortunately she passed away before I got the recipe - I have been searching for this recipe for ages). Not to sweet, not too crumbly - just perfect!!

I made this recipe with the orange zest and dried cranberries. They are delicious, and I will make them again. However, I will change up the prep method. I usually try to follow a recipe exactly the first time, which is what I did here. But I do not like grating anything on a box grater, and frozen butter is no exception. And trying to mix the butter into the dry ingredients with my hands was a total mess. So terribly sticky that a large portion of the dough stuck to my fingers. In desperation, I sprayed a little Pam on my hands, and I was finally able to get a ball formed. From that point on, everything went smoothly. The next time I make this recipe, I will skip the grating with a box grater and mixing with my fingers. Instead, I will follow other reviewers suggestions to use my stand mixer or food processor.

This recipe is one of the best simple scone recipes I have found! Easily allows for substitutions. I made as described (without a food processor). They turned out slightly crisp on the outside, slightly moist on the inside, just like a little sweet biscuit. Round 2, I made Pumpkin Chocolate Chips scones, substituting the sour cream with canned pumpkin, the raisins with chocolate chips, and adding 3 tsp of pumpkin pie spice. Just wonderful!

Fantastic recipe! I think using a pastry cutter gives the best results. I also add a 1/2 tsp. vanilla and a 1/2 tsp. almond extract (I did not use the raisins). Amazing!

Made these yesterday, and I thought the dough looked too dry when it came time to roll it out. Before doing so, I added 1/4 cup of milk to the ingredients, and that did the trick. The end result was very good!
