These were my first donut making experience and they turned out great! Not quite as light and fluffy as a store bought donut, but a great alternative! I don't have a donut cutter, but now I might get one so I can make these more often with a little more ease (I just used a cup and a small circle cookie cutter for the middle.) I cut the recipe in half and it turned out great. Used just slightly less flour than the recipe called for. That's why you add it a little at a time.

Following the recipe exactly, the doughnuts came out heavy and chewy. Kind of a cross between a yeast and cake doughnut. Also needs more sweetness, as the taste was kind of like glazed bread. This is my first time making doughnuts so I am now scouring the internet for tips and tricks to make them lighter and/or a better recipe.

Wonderful recipe! I used my bread make to prep the dough! Thank you to whomever tossed that idea in there, saved me what I imagined was a ton of work! Overall it was a bit (lot) more time consuming than I imagined. But it was so worth it! The recipe made a TON!I provided four full plates, each neighbor got one. Lucky them. The texture was perfect. They fried perfectly, inside was nice and airy smooth. I added a vanilla bean paste about 1-1 1/2 T. to the glaze and it was incredible, set it apart from the ordinary glaze, but the consistency was great and provided enough for the whole recipe! The recipe is perfect as is! I only added vanilla bean b/c that's my thing :)

My first time at making doughnuts. This recipe is great. I halved the recipe because I did not have 5 cups of flour in my house. (Bad I know) I did not have any cutters small enough to make the doughnuts, so I used a small coffee cup and for the holes I used the cap from a mello yello bottle. Worked great. Next time, I think I will add a little bit more sugar to the dough and/or some flavoring (extract) just to see how it tastes. Oh and I did not use the glaze for the recipe, I used powdered sugar, water, vanilla extract and some cinnamon. Oh so good. I also rolled some in powdered sugar and cinnamon. Even my very picky husband ate these. Thanks for sharing!!

My first venture in doughnut making - and it won't be my last! These were simple and yummy. I did leave half the dough (unrolled) to sit overnight which created a yeasty doughnut, more complex flavor similar to sourdough. I enjoyed both batches but I think I will add a little nutmeg next time. Also I was running a bit low on shortening and used about 1/2 unsalted butter. Topped with various glazes including the one here, a lemon glaze, cinnamon and sugar, and chocolate raspberry. I filled several with raspberry jam. This recipe was more than worth the purchase of a doughnut cutter! Thx Kelly!

These were fantastic! I used quick rise yeast to cut down a little on rise time. I found that I didn't need to use all the flour. I set the cut dough on parchment paper on a baking stone and left them in a slightly warm oven to rise. They came off the paper easily. I picked them up by hand and dropped them into the oil. I didn't have any problems with them deflating or sticking as others have described. They browned a little too much for me in the beginning, but they tasted perfect. They cook REALLY quickly so don't get distracted while frying them! The butter flavor of the glaze was a big hit. I made some with cinnamon sugar and they were good too, but nothing like the glazed ones. Thanks for an awesome donut recipe!
