I'm not a sweet potato fan but this got rave reviews at Christmas dinner. It was very similar to another recipe I usually make but has alot less sugar, which I preferred. This is now my 'go-to' sweet potato recipe. My only changes were that I baked the potatos and doubled the vanilla as others stated.

amazing! I made a few alterations though: I added 1 teaspoon each of cinnamon and allspice, 1/2 teaspoon of cloves, and a 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg to the potatoes and about 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon to the topping. Also, instead of 1/2 cup sugar, I used 1/4 cup sugar and 2 tablespoons each of molasses and maple syrup. As previous reviewers have said, it is absolutely essential that you bake the potatoes instead of boiling them! I baked 2 large potatoes at 375 degrees for about an hour and 15 minutes, or until a fork goes in easily.

Very good! Only next time I will use a third of the amount of sugar the recipe suggested, a half a cup was a bit too sweet. Sweet potatoes are naturally sweet so I don't think that much sugar is needed. My husband loved it all the same....

Made this for Thanksgiving and everybody loved it! I had to make half of it with marshmallows on top to appease my kids, and put this topping on the other half. They tried both, and found they enjoyed this topping too! I did bake my sweet potatoes (stuck them in with the turkey and pulled them out when they were nice and soft, then let them sit for awhile to cool off until they were a good temperature to handle--and I was ready to deal with them!) I've never boiled sweet potatoes so I don't have an opinion about that method of preparing this dish.....so even though I didn't follow all of the steps exactly it is 5 stars in our holiday book!! I also used Splenda for Baking in the sweet potato custard part of the recipe--several diabetics at the table-- and nobody could tell any different.

THIS IS AMAZING STUFF! In our family, we make this probably once a month and always look forward to the leftovers. We have converted anti-sweet potato people for the yumminess- probably because of all the brown sugar! I personally would like it better without all of the brown sugar, but it is just fine with all of it. It does taste like candy! Overall, though, it is a totally delicious and awesome meal that will last a while.

I loved this casserole and all of the family loved it as well. I did modify the recipe by skipping on the extra 1/2 cup of white sugar (it was plenty sweet enough without the extra sugar). I also added a layer of glazed half-pecans to the top of the dish which which really added to the flavor.

I'll save you the time. 1) Make this recipe 2) Bake the sweet potatoes, don't boil and don't use canned 3) Make this recipe. It's unbelievably good. Seriously. It's almost like dessert. I halved the sugar because after I baked the potatoes and tasted them, they were already sweet. Phenomenal recipe!

My entire family of 20 on Thanksgiving absolutely LOVED this... said it's the best sweet potatoes they've ever had! I baked the potatoes, added a little vanilla and a pinch of cinnamon. The pecans and brown sugar really make this dish wonderful.

This was pretty good! The only things I did differently were baking the sweet potatoes and NOT adding the white sugar to the sweet potato mixture as we like ours tasting more like vegetables and less like candy. Thanks Tina!

Made it for the first time on Thanksgiving and it was very good. I used less sugar b/c I didn't want a desert like dish. Will try it in full sugar mode at another time.
