This recipe is great, my whole family loves it! I leave out the butter; I've made it both with and without the butter and think it tastes just fine without it, and of course, its healthier this way. I also leave out the allspice. The apple 'gravy' really makes this dish a hit.

Like one of the others who commented, I too baked the yams for 45-min. Worked fine. Easy to peel and cut. As for the recipe, I added 2-3 oz of spiced rum! A good fit for the other spices, and a bit of an added 'mysterious' flavour.

Use GALA apples - they are the best. I used apple cider and nutmeg instead of allspice. Very easy! Can make this a day ahead by poaching the apples in the cider mixture first, then refrigerate.

Just made this one today, and WOW! I took a few tips from other reviews: I used 1/2 cup orange juice, 1/4 cup packed brown sugar. Other than that, I followed the recipe and it worked like a charm. My daughter, who only last week told me she despises yams, tried it and finished what she took (no seconds, but I'll take the small victory!).

Used Splenda brown sugar blend and Country Crock instead of the full-fat versions, and it turned out great! My family loved it, and my daughter NEVER eats yams. This is worth the effort to make.

Whoo Hoo! VERY delicious! notes: watch out for soaked yams: yams will peel a lot nicer if you don't leave them soaking in the "cold bath"... over-done sauce: keep your eye on the sauce or it turns into syrup--also, reduce the sweetness of the sauce as the yams are very, very good by themselves... crispy apples: don't over-microwave the apples because the slightly crunchy texture is such a nice surprise in this predictably Orange dish. Even people who had never seen apples with yams were very impressed: I should have made more!!

This was really good, but the sweet potatoes were a bit lost in the apples & sauce.

This recipe always gets rave reviews. However, I prefer to substitute the apple juice and lemon for 1/2 cup orange juice.

I followed the directions to a tee, but this did not help my recipe. I would suggest reducing the apple juice and increasing the number of sweet potatoes.

My husband and I really loved the flavor combination in this dish. It's all the flavors of apple sauce but with the added texture of the yams. They add a great consistency. I give it two big thumbs up.

This recipe was soooo good! That glaze is divine!! I made it at my moms for thanksgiving and everyone loved it so much we are having it for christmas too! The only thing I did different to it was I added a little extra butter. This one is definetly a keeper for the holidays! Thanks for sharing!

I was looking for a healthy sweet potato recipe and this hit the spot! Everyone loved it and I will definitely be making this again. The only part I didn't like doing was basting with the juice, that was a pain. I think I basted it 3 times while it baked.

I actually decreased the apple juice by 1/2 cup, added 1/4 cup more brown sugar and 1 tsp more of cornstarch and it worked great. Slice the apples thick, or they'll be done way before the yams!
