I made this several months ago on a whim, but forgot to save it to my recipe file. I've been looking and looking for it. Here it is!!!! This is by far my favorite pasta sauce! We had it for dinner on rigatoni and I saved the rest in small batches in the freezer. It was amazing! Holy smoke this is good!

This sauce is great. Just the way it is. If you notice it is the sauce for this cooks awesome lasagna. So it does not need a bunch of other vegetables. Red wine is a great addition but it is never in place of sugar. sugar is added to balance out the canned tomatoes. As for the fennel over load. No way. Fennel is great and not too much. Maybe some people need to stop trying recipes for kicks. If your that great of a cook make up your own.

I made this sauce for Mother's Day & loved it. Very easy to make & all I added was red pepper flakes. Thanks for the recipe!

This was an amazing recipe that I use often when making Italian food in need of a red sauce. I find it helpful to simmer the meats in a muscadine red wine (just a splash, or two, or three... depending on your love of wine!) because the addition gives it real character that is noticeable in the finished product. Hope this helps! :)

This is almost identical to the one 'in my head' for 40 years. But I don't 'get' the sugar :( since tomatoes have sooooo much sugar in them already. I would never add sugar. The few flakes of crushed red pepper is a nice touch. Bravo.

I have searched so long for a pasta sauce that the whole family would agree on. This is the one. It is so yummy and easy to prepare. I add oregano, and substitute extra tomato sauce for the tomatoes because that is my family's preference. I also leave out the meat, and put it all in the slow cooker with the Easy Slow Cooker Meatballs recipe also on this website. I have used it for lasagna too.

OMG! Delicious! I've made this twice and followed the recipe exactly and loved the result. And so did my 4 year old. But like any great recipe, this is not set in stone. In my 3rd, 4th and 5th versions of this sauce, I've done something different due to what was in my fridge at the time and to whom I was serving. I cut the sugar but added red wine, or added ground turkey, tried different veggies or added a cheese rind as another reviewer suggested. While some versions I thought were better than others, all versions were voraciously eaten to those it was served. I've decided to make a huge batch of this sauce once a month, freeze some and use the rest in another pasta recipe. Thanks.

This recipe is absolutely delicious. I have made it several times with the lasagna and EVERY time people have said how good it is. Since I couldn't find any sweet Italian sausage and personally I really do not like the taste of sauage, the only change I made was that I boiled the Italian sausage in beer and then chopped it.
