This bread was very dense and reminded me of bread I've eaten in Germany. Not light and fluffy, but a meal in itself. Maybe not for everyone... Not really a sandwich bread, but would probably make great rolls. I think I will try 1/2 whole wheat and 1/2 white flour next time to lighten the texture a bit.

I give this recipe only 4 stars because there are some key steps missing. For example, how big of a loaf is it? I had to make it 3 times before I figured out I should select the smallest loaf size on my Cuisinart bread machine (I too used the basic white bread option and lightest crust). Also, be sure to mix the dry milk and water. Maybe that's a standard step when using dry milk, but to a newbie bread baker like myself it't not obvious. The last time I made this I accidentally added an extra TBSP of butter. It was alot more moist and will keep making it that way.

One of the best 100% whole wheat bread recipes I have ever made in a bread maker. I add about 1-2 tablespoons of Vital Gluten and it helps the bread rise a bit more. The texture is perfect. I have also added dried cranberries on a few batches for a wonderful twist.

This was by far the best whole wheat bread I've made. I've tried several others, but this one was the unanimous favorite. My kids and husband loved it.

Thanks so much for this recipe. Makes a beautiful loaf. I multiplied by 1.5 to make a Roman Meal sized loaf, worked great. I ommitted the shortening, and used only olive oil. Used 1/8 cup milk instead of water and didn't use powdered. Used only 1 t. salt. (these measurements for regular recipe amounts) Takes longer to rise, so give it time. Kids loved it! Will be our daily bread for a long time, I think! 350 ~25 min.

Now, I am making this for the third time. It is THE BEST bread ever. The second time, it didn't raise as well as it should for some reasons, (maybe, the yeast was bit old, I am guessing) but still the bread tasted super! My husband loved it so much. It is really the best!! Thanks!!

This is a nice bread recipe, and I like that it actually uses all wheat flour. I've made it twice. The first time I made it in the the bread machine and it came out really hard and yucky. No clue what I did wrong! The next time, I just made the dough in the bread machine and then I let it rise for another hour and baked it at 350 for 30 minutes. Much better result. It was a tad crumbly, which made it a little harder to eat, but we still enjoyed it very much.

This bread recipe is great. I've been looking for a soft, whole wheat bread recipe for my bread machine for a few weeks and all that I had tried so far were too dry and heavy. Not so with this one! It was very soft, light and sweet! I did change it a bit -- my son is allergic to dairy so I left out the dry milk powder and I didn't even notice the omission. I also used 2 Tbsp of canola oil instead of the shortening because we try to avoid partially-hydrogenated oils (trans fats) at all costs. I would have substituted it with butter but couldn't because of the dairy issue. Canola oil worked great. I also substituted 1 cup of bread flour/2 cups of ww flour for the 3 cups of ww flour to make it a bit lighter. All in all, this recipe was great (we finished the loaf in one day)and I will continue to make it for my family. Thanks to MELH for submitting this recipe!!

This is a very good bread recipe. I made a few changes by adding wheat gluten and baking it in the oven. It rose really well and the flavor is good. Not a big fan of using the shortening but I will more than likely make again.

Didn't rise well. I'm going to use some gluten and 2.5 cups Wheat flour and .5 cups bread flour and try again. I will update my review if it works this time.

Very good bread! I made the dough in my breadmaker and then transfered it to a bread pan to rise and bake in the oven. It turned out perfect and tastes wonderful. Thanks for a great recipe!

I replaced half water with fresh milk, since I didn't have any milk powder. I experimented with different amounts of honey. 2 tbs is the best. A delicious whole wheat bread. Not heavy at all.

This is great. I didn't have powdered milk so I substitued 1 T. of regular milk. Also, made this on the dough setting, let it rise for 1 hr. and then baked it in the oven at 375 for about 25 minutes. Next time I think I'll let it bake a bit longer. Thanks for the recipe!

Of the several recipes I have tried in my bread machine, this is the one I keep coming back to. The flavor and texture are just perfect. I don't ever have powdered milk on hand so I just use about 1Tbsp of regular milk in place of 1Tbsp water.

This doesn't need another great review but here is one anyways. I am new to making bread with a bread machine, I either bought bread or handmade. With a very busy one year old underfoot, I decided on the compromise of a bread machine and this was the second recipe. This is wonderfull bread, slightly sweet but nutty with the whole wheat. I would say how long it stayed fresh but it was gone too soon. 2nd batch in the machine as I type. Great recipe!

This is the first bread recipe I have ever tried and it was so amazing. I don't have a bread machine but you really don't need one. My 2 year old son helps me and it's fun to do. I've made it about 5 times now and it gets better every time. I used butter instead of shortening and used about 1/4 cup honey instead of 1/3. I sprinkled some dry oats on top for a little something and it's just so easy, quick and delicious. Great for sandwiches and toast. I plan to never buy a loaf of bread again.
