I made this last night, fantastic. way exceeded my expectations. I sub'd the shortening for an equal amount of margarine and it was wonderful!

Thank you thank you! I moved from a high elevation (7000 feet) to a low elevation (1000 feet), and this is the only recipe I can get to work in my machine. MMMM even my little toddlers love it.

I love this recipe. Thanks so much for sharing. The only thing I do different is use butter instead of shortening. It turns out great.

I've tried numerous times to bake a loaf of bread my husband likes, and never succeeded...until this recipe. Not five minutes ago he spontaneously emailed me to tell me how much he liked this bread recipe. I've never known him do something like that before. WOW! This bread is very moist, which is exactly what we were looking for. I did add vital wheat gluten. Delish! =)

I use this as our everyday sandwich bread. After cooling completely, it holds up very nice. I use 1.5 cups white, and 1.5 cups wheat. What is especially nice is that it does not stale fast. I live in a very humid climate and we can eat the same loaf for days without it getting too stale. Very good, simple recipe.

I love this recipe! It turned out light and delicious. After searching for a good breadmaker recipe for whole wheat bread I've been disappointed in my past results but after trying this recipe my search is over. Thanks for posting!

This bread turned out great !! The crust was so tender and it was simple to put together. I have made it 5 or 6 times. I too put butter instead of shortening and use the wheat gluten. I have been putting wheat berries in also. I haven't used any other recipe since I ran across this one. Delicious !!

I made it as written, but added 2 tbsp wheat gluten to help it rise. Great texture, nice crust.

I'm somewhat new to bread making and have been enjoying my WellBuilt breadmaker for about one and a half years. I love 100% whole wheat bread and have tried a number of recipes... all flopped, either because I didn't add wheat gluten, or, for some other unknown reason. I decided to try this bread (only because so many people rated it) and I made it just the way it is written except: I used butter instead of shortening, and I used 2 tsp of yeast instead of 1 1/2 tsp (I was afraid it wouldn't rise). It came out wonderful! It rose high (not over the top of the pan) with a well rounded top, and a flavor that can't be beat. I'm making my second loaf right now to freeze! Maybe I'll make another tomorrow!

Wow, great recipe! First time I used the bread machine. I substituted butter for the shortening, brown sugar for the honey. Skipped the skim milk powder. I would reduce the sugar and salt next time. Set the machine on whole wheat and light crust. Turned out perfect!

I was very pleased with this recipe. It is very moist and has good flavor. It stayed moist up until it was gone almost 3 days later. So far it hasn't lasted longer than that. I did use butter instead of shortening and used 2 cups whole wheat and 1 cup white flour. I also used the whole wheat setting on my Breadman. I have used the regular cycle and the rapid cycle and both turned out wonderful. Now that I have a good wheat recipe I am going to try a little ground flax and oats in it as well.

I use the light crust setting on the bread machine. I also added 3 T. wheat gluten as suggested, substituted butter for shortening. I used 1 cup bread flour and 2 cups w/w flour for a less dense bread. This is a delicious bread. I have made it several times now and we always enjoy it. Made it for my visiting family and they (picky grandchildren and all) loved it.

This made a really delicious loaf of whole wheat bread. The only changes I made were to add 1 tablespoon of yeast (all my bread machine recipes call for 1 Tbls with 3 cups of flour) and to use butter in place of shortening. I used my Whole Wheat setting for the extra kneading and rise time. I got a beautiful high loaf. Texture is very good and soft. This is a keeper!

Awesome! I can't believe I haven't rated this yet. I make this ALL the time, it's my mom's all-time favorite. My family only eats whole grains, and it's hard to find a really hearty, tasty whole wheat bread in the supermarket. With a recipe this easy, who wants store-bought bread?!? :]
