Hearty Whole Wheat Cookies

My grandchildren would do just about anything for one of these cookies. Packed with chocolate chips and peanuts, they're made with oats and whole wheat flour, so I don't mind them nibbling on them. --Lynore Derkson, Airdrie, Alberta

One day, my grandmother and I were planning on making cookies, but she didn't have all-purpose flour. I suggested we use whole wheat flour. The result is a crisp hearty cookie loaded with flavor.

My grandmother first made this gingerbread over 100 years ago. It was inexpensive, and the ingredients were always on hand. I remember that the kitchen smelled like heaven when Grandmother baked her gingerbread. The only thing better was when she took it out of the oven and served it with a generous topping of fresh whipped cream!

THE AROMA OF gingerbread is what I remember most about my grandmother's kitchen, and it meant dessert would be special. That was nearly 50 years ago, but whenever I catch a whiff of ginger and cinnamon, I'm back with Grandmother and the happiness I knew. -Toni Hamm, Vandergrift, Pennsylvania
