Western-Style Baked Beans

SUBMITTED BY: ELVISB      PHOTO BY: GodivaGirl

"My husband does not like baked beans but can't get enough of these. They are loaded with a variety of meats and get a little bit of sweetness from molasses and brown sugar. If you don't have a slow cooker, you can bake them in the oven until heated through. "

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 (28 ounce) cans baked beans with pork
  • 1 pound bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1/2 pound chopped ham
  • 2 tablespoons minced onion
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 1/4 cup water (optional)

DIRECTIONS

  1. Crumble the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir until no longer pink, 5 to 10 minutes. Drain off grease and transfer the beef to a 4 quart or larger slow cooker. Stir in the baked beans, bacon, ham, onion, chili powder, ketchup, brown sugar and molasses. If it seems thick, stir in the water. Cover and cook on High for 3 hours or cook for 6 to 8 hours on Low.

LOVED this recipe!! I did make one substitution and that was for the ham (didn't have). I used finely chopped bbq pork. For the ground beef, I had some leftover hot dog sauce (Grandpa' Classic Coney Dog Sauce recipe) that I used. I've made many baked beans recipes and my guests and I really liked the flavors this dish had. It's almost a meal by itself. I had always cooked my beans in the oven for at least an hour prior to this recipe. I really liked the ease of putting all the ingredients into the crockpot and letting cook on high for 2 hours. Next time, I will add the water as needed after stirring occasionally for a thicker sauce. Can't wait to make these again for our next big BBQ bash!
