I'm a 'Svenska flicka' (Swedish girl) from northwest Iowa, where many Swedes settled at the turn of the century. This recipe was given to me by a Swedish friend. It's obviously a 20th century version of a 19th century favorite, since back then they didn't have bouillon cubes or evaporated milk! I think you'll agree that these modern-day 'Kottbullar' are very tasty.

This is a very old sweet and sour cocktail recipe; I remember looking forward to it as a kid at my Mom's holiday parties. It will look horrible and smell worse when first in the pan, but just wait. Don't ever tell what's in the sauce until after your guests have tasted it (otherwise they'll never try it). Serve with toothpicks; keep warm with a fondue pot. The sauce is kind of sweet, kind of sour, but not like Chinese food.

These meatballs, baked in a well-seasoned sauce, are always on the menu for our family's informal Christmas Eve get-togethers. Leftovers-- if there are any-- are a cinch to reheat in a slow cooker.
