Great recipe!! From the list of ingredients, I thought these would taste similar to chocolate chip cookies, but I was pleasantly surpised to find they tasted more like English toffee candy, including being crisp and buttery. I followed the recipe exactly, except I used milk chocolate chips instead of candy bars. I found that using an angled Wilton spatula worked well for spreading the batter and chocolate. Thanks for the recipe; I'm sure I'll be making these often!!

I'm so glad I found this recipe. My mother used to make these every Christmas, but it's been 10 years since she passed away and I'd almost forgotten about them. This is a perfect combination of sweet, crumbly, chocolaty goodness -- everyone loves them. I followed the recipe exactly, but doubled it for a large group. I used a large cookie sheet (jelly roll pan), and they came out about about 1/2" thick with the chocolate bar topping. I'm going to re-start the Christmas tradition beginning this year!

These worked well for a family reunion I just attended - they were almost gone when I left. I made them in a 9x13 dish, used chocolate chips instead of bars, and topped them off with finely chopped walnuts and toffee bits. I made them the night before and put them in the fridge to ensure that the chocolate would be firm, as our reunion was going to be outside. The bars got quite firm - my hubby had to cut them out of the dish for me. I felt the base wasn't really a shortbread - more like a chewy cookie, but that may be from my pan choice. Overall, these were easy, pretty and tasty.

This is the BEST recipe! Very easy and quick too. Use dark brown sugar for added flavor. Line the pan with no stick foil, then when finished baking cool and just lift them out and cut. Top with walnuts, toffee pieces or both for an alternative to pecans! YUMMY!

Mine were hard to spread thin enough - got them down to 1/2" but they should probably go a bit thinner. Definitely use all butter.

Made this as a treat for a Lenten soup/sandwich supper tonight. My daughter and I thought it was delicious. It was so easy to make, too. I did make it in a 13x9" pan, and baked for 16 minutes. It was very chewy. Went to look for pan, before church service started and it was gone. Another woman told me it was one of the first things that were gone. Another church member asked for the recipe. Chocolate was still gooey, when we took it to church. Yum! Will make again!

Tasty, but not what I was expecting. I thought these would be chewy, however they were actually crunchy (like a cookie) once they cooled. They should be called Toffee Cookies. :) Great toffee flavor. As soon as the choloate has melted and been spread you are going to want to cut these into squares. Once they have cooled they harden and it is difficult to cut them apart without breaking them and causing lots of crumbs. Make sure you grease your pan REALLY well too!!

AWESOME! My sister and I made these bars using this recipe and we loved them. They are very easy to make and they make a lot of bars. These bars are very rich so I cut them into small triangles. I had many people asking me for the recipe.

I am giving my rating based on how easy these were to make...Unfortunately I am in Christmas cookie mode and I didn't read the directions completely. I added an egg and instead of just the yolk. Not sure how these are going to turn out. Hopefully okay!

They are good and somewhat resemble toffee bars, but are definately not the real deal.

Mmmmmmm! I made these today for our Sunday School class tomorrow, and I wasn't sure what to expect. They were so easy and taste so good! They taste exactly like a toffee candy bar. It's good I made another dessert also because we wouldn't have enough left to take to class! I will definitely be making this easy and delicious bar again. I might make it in a 9x13 pan next time because they came out too thin in my opinion for a bar. That's the only thing I'd change! I did use some chocolate chips and some Hershey's dark Bliss pieces, and spreaded all together.

So simple and so good! I skip the chocolate bars and pecans at the end and sprinkled crushed Heath bars all over the top as soon as I take the pan out of the oven instead.

Quick and easy. Our Relay For Life team had a bake sale and I made multiple things. Picked this recipe because it was quick, easy and very appealing with the chocolate layer. Tasted pretty good too!

My Mom and Grandma made these for Christmas also. We used a giant Hershey bar for the chocolate and since we had a wonderful front porch, we would keep them out there and they would be nice and cold. Since I no longer have a front porch, I use the garage insead.
