This is a delicious, open-faced apple pie with a crunchy, sweet almond topping. It 's made with 12 apples sliced thinly and coated with sugar, cinnamon and a splash of vanilla. The apples are then heaped into an unbaked pie crust, topped with almonds and baked.

The trick to this pie is pre-cooking the apples with lots of sugar and cinnamon to sweeten and spice them up. The cooked apples are spooned into an unbaked pie shell, covered with a top crust and baked in the oven until golden brown.

For this clever creation, butter and pecans are put into the pie pan before the bottom pastry. After the pie is completely filled with sweet, spiced apples, topped with a second crust and baked, the entire pie is flipped to reveal a luxurious pecan glaze.

The pastry for this pie is sweet and flaky thanks to the addition of sugar and egg yolks. It 's laid out in a 10x15-inch jelly roll pan and topped with layers of sliced apples and sugar. The top crust is fitted and crimped, and the pie is baked in a very hot oven. It 's served warm with a confectioners ' sugar glaze. This pie serves 20.

My grandmother used to make this pie when we had Christmas at her house. She used a paper bag to cover the pie, but in the updated version we use parchment paper. It is a very old recipe. Enjoy!

Sliced apples are tossed with sugar, flour, spices, and butter, along with some rich caramel candies. While the pie bakes, everything melts and mingle with the apples.
