Yum! I found 6 frozen cube steaks at our local Grocery Outlet for less than $4. They were perfect for this recipe. Followed the directions except went a little light on the hot sauce. Our entire family loved it. They only suggested that I use garlic in the gravy. Will do that next time, and there WILL be a next time! Thanks smylpurty for a great recipe!

I cannot fry things. At all. I broke out the cast iron pan and decided I just HAVE to learn how to successfully fry something and figured it doesn't get much more classic than this. It was a success! The outside was crispy and the meat was tender! My dinner companions were shocked. Thanks for this great recipe!

I thought the flavor of this was pretty good. The gravy was very good. It didn't turn out perfect but it's worth trying again. I would prefer that the coating on the steaks were a little crunchier, so, next time I make it, I think I'll use panko crumbs.

Born and bred a true Yankee this is only the second time I've ever attempted to make chicken fried steak (first time was a flop so I'd just order it when we went out to eat.) My husband brought home some cube steak so I looked around and found this recipe and decided to give it a try. Let me tell you, this is the best chicken fried steak I've ever eaten! I doubled the recipe and cooked it for 8 of us tonight and it was a huge success! I doubt that I'll ever cook chicken fried steak with any other recipe. Thank you so much for posting!

Best batter ever. Stayed on steaks. Tasted fab. Followed coating recipe and gravy recipe as written except just used a couple dashes tabasco bc nervous for kids. Used "mock chicken fried steak" from this site for meat. Eliminates the chewiness of cube steak. Outstanding.

Absolutely delicious and easy. My family loves cfs and are picky eaters. They could not stop raving about this...it was a big hit at my house...will definitely use it again. The only thing I did differently was to put seasonings in flour instead of in egg mixture. Also, next time I think I will season raw steaks with a little salt and pepper.

This was wondeful. Instead of buttermilk I used 2% milk and it turned out perfect. My husband loved it. I also put the spices in with the flour. Turned out wonderful

This recipe definitely is a home run! One thing I have to mention is that the recipe makes enough for at least 6 steaks, so you may want to adjust accordingly. I added 1 tsp. of poultry seasoning to give it the authentic "chicken" flavor. As a substitute for buttermilk, I whisked 3/4 cup sour cream with 3/4 cup milk and it worked great. I didn't put the spices in with the milk & egg. I mixed them with the flour so that when I used the flour for the gravy, it was seasoned. It also wasn't necessary to use so much shortening. I started with 1 cup and added an additional 1/2 cup as I cooked the steaks. This is a wonderful recipe - hope this helps!

This is a great recipe, my family loved it! The steps are easy to follow and allow ample time to make your side dishes. I served with mash potatoes, green salad, applesauce, and hot rolls. The flavor was wonderful, a real stick-to-your-ribs meal. If you are craving down home cooking, this is it. While I cook healthy meals for my family every night, I could easily add this to our menu once a month for a real treat.

We prepared this Chicken Fried Steak tonight. Being a Texan, trust me I know a thing or two about Chicken Fried Steak, and this was absolutely one of the best I have ever eaten! Couple things to note... - To get a little more flavor, season the bare meat with some salt and pepper before flouring and dredging it. - We found medium-low heat to be just about perfect for cooking. Let each side cook roughly 5 minutes and the steak was cooked perfectly. But I think even without that stuff, this recipe is fantastic! Good luck, and enjoy it!

This recipe is great! I left out the tabasco and added a lot of Lawry's salt for flavor. The coating turned out wonderful. I did have to do the same thing as a previous poster and finish it off in the oven. My coating was perfect but the meat wasn't cooked. The gravy was a touch bland so I added more Lawry's salt and pepper to it.

We didn't much care for this recipe. Maybe it's because I didn't use a cast iron skillet that the crust didn't want to stick. Or maybe it's because I omitted the Tabasco. Either way, my husband asked that I not try this one again.

This is really good! I always loose my crust but I think the key is a good cast iron skillet.
