ok, it is in the oven now. My changes were 1/2 white and 1/2 brown sugar, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp nutmeg, 1 tsp vanilla, sprinkle of salt. Instead of walnuts I put in a cup of chocolate chips. Can't wait to taste it, just wanted to write down my ingredients. well, we had too many desserts for our guests to try so right now it is in the freezer. I will get back to this after trying it!

Everyone that tries this loves it! The moisture and texture is amazing. I am a cinnamon junkie, so I added a bit to it- very nice! My partner ate this up in two days!

Excellent! As per other reviews, I did 1/2 cup brown. 1/2 cup withe sugar, vanilla and cinnamon for more flavor. The dash of rhum recommended by Krista V. was just the kick it needed! I also tried it with either the butter or the apple sauce and it was excellent both ways. The only thing I did different was use 1cup all purpose four and 1 cup whole wheat flour. MMMM!

This recipe is wonderful! I'm usually bad at cooking but this turned out great! I even used bananas that weren't ripe, and it still tasted good!

I liked the texture and density of this recipe. What I've been looking for. I did add nuts, vanilla and cinnamon. Otherwise I think it would have been bland.

As one reviewer suggested, I used 1/4 cup of apple sauce instead of shortening, added 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla and some nutmeg and cinnamon, and pecans. I also only baked it for 45 minutes and that was enough. Next time I would add more vanilla, and lots more nutmeg and cinnamon. Raspberry preserves was the perfect topping right prior to its being served. My husband loved it, I liked it very much and I think next time it will be even better with additional spicing.

Darn close to the Better Homes and Gardens 1950's recipe my family has made for years. Great flavor, dense and moist, but a little sweet. I may reduce the amount of sugar next time from 1c. to 3/4c. I added 1c. of chopped walnuts to the batter and sprinkled a few more on top before baking. I divided the batter into four mini loaves and baked for 40 minutes. I would definitely make this recipe again.
