I handed the recipe off to my 14 year old daughter and asked her to make it while I bathed our 2 year old and put her to bed. By the time I came back to the kitchen, it was in the oven and smelled great! She was concerned about the icing, but it spread easily. We cut it into squares and took it to church for a bakesale...I wished we had made two! It was so moist and delicious it was sold in a flash! Many people requested a copy of this recipe!

I am always excited to find eggless cake recipes that taste good. This is an incredibly delicious cake. Make sure to use a sheet pan (not 9x13) and don't worry about the icing being thick, as some reviewers mentioned. Mine was like spreading fudge on top of the cake but I got it on and when we ate it at the birthday party all we heard was praise. Trust the recipe, it worked for us and is very rich, delicious and chocolatey just like Texas sheet cake should be. Oh, I did sub out the sour cream and used plain yogurt instead. Great recipe.

I made this for the first time Thanksgiving 2011. It was a hit. While my family really enjoyed it, I thought the icing was a little too sweet. For the nut lovers in the family I mixed pecans into half of the icing and spread it on one half of the cake. The other half was served without nuts.

If you do an Allrecipes search for the most popular Texas Sheet Cake recipes, the top two that come up are pretty much duplicates of this one EXCEPT they both have eggs. Leads me to believe that the eggs were accidentally omitted from this recipe.

Five Stars for Texas Sheet Cake! Substituted 1 Cup of Strong Brewed Coffee for the water. It really enhances the flavor of the chocolate.

I modified this recipe so much that I'm not sure I'm actually reviewing it, but I'll add my review in case someone is looking for modification ideas. There's only one of me so I cut the recipe in half and baked it in two 2 cup glass dishes (greased with butter because I don't have shortening). I like chocolate so I kept the amount of cocoa the same (1/4 cup), but I didn't want something too sweet so I halved the sugar (half cup). I cut out 2 tbsp of butter because I find that I can often get away with a little less butter in recipes like this. I used brown sugar and light sour cream because those are what I had on hand (how am I out of white sugar??). I didn't make any icing at all because it's bad enough that I'm making chocolate cake after all the goodies I ate at Christmas. Besides, I'm lazy :) I wound up with a pretty good chocolate cake. I had to bake it maybe a little longer than what was recommended here, maybe my choice of dish made it taller. Whipped cream or cool whip or something light and fluffy would be good on top. I bet this would be good made with coffee instead of water.

FINALLY an EASY EGG-FREE cake for my nut/egg allergy son! Makes a lot, very tasty, and he LOVES it, along with everyone else in our home. Easy to make, easy to eat, and love the frosting that tastes like fudge! Just a note, when I whisked the confectioners sugar in, and it started lumpy, but then smoothed out. I think next time I will sift it in and see if it works better. But don't wait too long, because when you pour it, it sets up fast on the surface and has a nice gloss! Thanks for posting this awesome recipe, this will be my standard to take to parties now! LOVE LOVE LOVE!
