I ABSOLUTELY love this recipe. My great grandmother made it all the time. It is wonderful exactly as written however I've always added 1/2 chopped (drained) maraschino cherries along with chopped walnuts in the icing portion and it gives it a whole new dimension.

This is absolutely hands down the best chocolate cake I have ever eaten. This is a favorite of my family. I am asked to fix this cake quite often.

This is the sheet cake my family has always made, all the way back to my great-grandmother. It is delicious and easy to make. It never lasts more than a few hours in the house.

Worked out perfect! Just be sure to use the proper flour, I used a self-rising flour and it wasn't as flat as sheet cake needs to be. So be careful to choose the flour correctly.

The cake tasted like a chocolate pancake and the frosting was pure sugar. We used only half the sugar on the frosting and could hardly choke it down. Hurt my mouth.

Great little snacking cake! Great texture in the cake itself, not too light, it was a bit denser and had some body. The cake was very mild chocolate flavor, the icing is what really makes this one great. It gets a crisp outer layer and is very sweet. I added about half a cup of pecan pieces to the icing. I didn't measure them as I only had a little in the sack. I cut this in half and used a quarter sheet pan. Very good and I will definitely make this again! Thanks Diane!

Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, my college roommate's mom made this for us and was kind enough to share the recipe. As years passed and after several relocations, I lost the recipe. Imagine my delight to find it right here!:) Now I make this again for potluck suppers and family reunions, and everyone enjoys this yummy cake tremendously.

This icing is really what makes this cake. I did add an additional tablespoon of cocoa to the cake mix for a more chocolate flavor. Make sure to sift your ingredients so you don't get any "white" specs in your cake or icing. Although this cake is good at room temperature, it's even better refrigerated overnight and served cold.

This recipe makes a delicious chocolatey, fudgey cake. It's a down-home-type cake (not particularly elegant) but a lovely way to end a family dinner. This one really satisfies a chocolate cake craving.

Great recipe! The only change I made was to increase the cocoa in the cake and the icing by 1 tbsp. each since I like a deeper chocolate flavor.

This is the exact recipe I used to make years ago. I am so glad I found it again. I remember that I sometimes added cinnamon, so I added 1 tsp. This was very good, but I think just a hint of cinnamon would be better. Next time I make this I will add 1/2 tsp.of cinnamon. Thank you for submitting this great recipe Diane.

This was very simple to make and turned out quite moist, but I wish it would have had a deeper chocolate flavor (the cake itself). Frosting was good; I didn't realize that I was low on powdered sugar and only used about 3 cups instead of 4 which made it plenty sweet enough. I also added some walnuts to the frosting because that is the way I've always had it.

First, this cake is SUPPOSED to be super thin. Hence, Texas SHEET Cake. Like the reviewer below said, use the large jellyroll size pan (15"x10") not a 9x13 or 8x8...it just won't work. Very very moist and rich. I lost my original recipe about a year ago and have been searching to find one that will work. This one is almost there, but I do add a bit more cocoa. It just didn't have enough chocolate flavor. Otherwise, this recipe is just awesome! Be sure to pour the icing over the cake right out of the oven. It soaks in and makes a beautiful thin smooth icing on top. ALSO, IF YOU COVER THIS WITH FOIL OR SARANWRAP...be sure to use toothpicks or something to prop up the foil, otherwise it will stick to the icing and you'll have a huge mess. Lesson learned the hard way! :-)

Been making cakes for years. About once a year or so, I try a scratch cake, just to remind myself why I stick with Duncan Hines. This cake was moist, but barely tasted like chocolate. Also, I baked it in two 8x8 pans, and it was barely enough. Not sure how you could make it in a large sheet pan, as the cake would be so thin. Frosted with cream cheese II frosting from this site. It was better the second day, but I think I'll pass on this one.
