'My mom made this thick soup when I was young,' recalls Michelle Kaiser of Bozeman, Montana. 'She passed the recipe on to me with a 'Favorite Recipes Box' she created when I started college. That was 10 years ago, and the dish remains one of my favorites.'

With lots of chicken and ham, this lightened-up corn chowder has become a favorite at my house, relates Janet Boote of Hull, Iowa. I like to use my own frozen sweet corn when it's available.

'EVERYONE in my wife's family is a corn lover, so her mom came up with this wonderful recipe to satisfy their appetites. With the bacon, sausage and potatoes, it's hearty enough to be a one-pot meal, but it's also really good with the chicken.'

This hearty soup has been a family favorite since I first acquired the recipe from a popular Wisconsin restaurant. Served with crusty French bread and a tossed salad, it is a great Saturday night supper. I've even served it to a group of 50 at a church luncheon. --Sue A. Jurack

Chowder is a classic comfort food here in the Northeast, especially during cooler weather. Whenever I make a trip home to Pittsburgh, Mom has this simmering on the stove for me.

I'VE SERVED this chowder for so many years that I don't remember where I got the recipe. It's one of my husband's favorite meals. It serves the two of us generously. If there's some left over, I freeze it for another time. -Joan Baskin, Black Creek, British Columbia

This hearty soup is a meal in itself when served with a salad and bread. For a spicier flavor, I sometimes substitute Mexicorn for the whole kernel corn.

This corn chowder is made with plenty of fresh corn as well as tomatillos, hominy, and roasted red bell peppers. Serve with homemade cornbread and a salad. If you start the cornbread while the water is boiling, you can have dinner on the table in under an hour.
