I followed this recipe exactly & was not happy with it. It left a greasy feeling in our mouths & didn't have a very good flavor.

The combination of oil, cream of tartar and confectioners' sugar in a cookie recipe is a dead giveaway for a cookie that is light and crispy, almost "sandie" like in texture. This was just what I was after with these sugar cookies, and this is exactly what I got. I omitted the nutmeg but otherwise followed the recipe just as written. Delicious.

Good cookie! I didn't have time to chill dough, so I didn't. Just dropped onto cookie sheet, threw the sugar/cinnamon (and added a little nutmeg, because we love nutmeg) on top of the cookies, and baked. Hubby loves them, and we are picky! Thanks for the recipe. It's a keeper. Oh, and it's still good with margarine instead of butter, although I'm sure butter would be best!

These tasted like sugar cookies that I used to get from a bakery near work. Thanks for figuring out how to do this. The sugared glass trick was cool too. Basically, you're just using it to press the cookie evenly. The sugar helps it to release. The nutmeg just makes it look nice. They're great with egg nog.

These cookies are crisp on the outside, with a deliciously soft inside. I recommend against adding any sugar to the top. They were way too sweet (this from a woman who could eat vanilla frosting from a can). Without the added sugar, still sweet, but I enjoyed the buttery flavor more.

My grandma used to make sugar cookies for us when we were little and when I couldn't find her recipe I was looking for something similar on here. I came across this recipe and LOVE IT!! This is a very good cookie that isn't too sweet. I didn't have cream of tartar so i switched it up with 3 tsp of white vinegar (and YES, that is a valid sub for cream of tartar). I use a mix of 1/4c. sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon and 1 tsp nutmeg for sprinkling on top before baking. The whole family loves these cookies. Thanks for the recipe!

This is a great recipe! I did not cool it overnight or add the extra sugar with nutmeg...and they were still much loved by all.

I'll deffinately be adding this to my recipe book for cookies :D I ommited the salt and cream of tartar as there was none in the house but the cookies I think would have been no different if I had added them. I also replaced the vanilla with a citron flavouring and they turned out extremely well however because I had not used vanilla flavouring I also did not use nutmeg but as I have said above I really don't think it would make a difference! All in all though an extremely delicious cookie recipe that was just perfect and not almost cake like it had just the right "bite" to it and now my inlaws are all begging for the recipe.

For some reason, the oil makes the chewiness of these cookies! This is my sugar cookie staple because they are NOT cakey, and plus, I don't have the patience for the roll & cut out procedure. Maybe when I have kids! :) But this is the tastiest drop sugar cookie recipe I have found so far.

I have been searching for this recipe for years! I first made it as a little girl out of an old Girl Scouts of America cookbook I found at a garage sale. Over many years and moves the book got lost, but allrecipes helped me find this and a vintage coffee cake recipe for my aunt today!!!
