Loved, Loved, Loved this!! Made this along with the Hot Peanut Sauce from this site, which I served over spaghetti noodles with chicken and white rice. The sweet & sour sauce was better than the restaurant we usually order from. The only reason I would order this out from now on is convenience, because this recipe is WAY better!! I used crushed pineapple only because I had opened a can the day before for my son, but otherwise didn't change a thing! When we first started cooking the chicken it was really sticking to the pan...then we figured out that we were supposed to have a pan full of hot oil, not just a Tbls as I was reading in the recipe. The Tbls was for the batter, which I had put in the batter and then thought it was for the pan. We laughed when we figured out it was supposed to DEEP fry the chicken. Then it came out great and we're glad we figured it out because it was worth the wait and the effort!! We will be making this a lot I suspect. Great as a special dish for company!!

This was FABULOUS. It did take a while, but it was worth it, for sure. Instead of pineapple chunks, I used an 11oz can of mandarin oranges in light syrup, and made the sauce with that instead. Also, I had no vinegar, so I used the juice of one lemon to substitute. I added the zest of an entire orange to the sauce for color, because I had no food coloring, and the flavor from the citrus was wonderful. It was very labor-intensive, all things considered, but after a while I'll probably make it again, because the chicken batter and the sauce are really superb.

Biggest waste of time, the sauce was really runny. I followed the directions exactly.

This worked out great for me. The sauce was DIVINE! You can absolutely forget about it on the stove, once you put the cornstarch mixture in. Mine sat over very low for at least half an hour, with no ill side effects. I did leave out the peppers and the chunks of pineapple, as no sweet and sour chicken I've ever had in any Chinese restaurant had them in it. Also, I didn't have any orange food coloring, so I used a few drops of red and a few drops of yellow. I wonder if there's a way to get that color naturally? I considered not adding the food coloring, because, let's face it, the sauce would taste the same without it. But, in the end, I couldn't leave it like that, so I added it. I think next time I may use the pineapple chunks, because they look really good in the picture. Thanks for the recipe!

Oh my, this was the best sweet and sour chicken recipe I've ever tried. I'm so glad LINDAHU submitted this one. This will become a regular at my house. I couldn't find orange food coloring at the store, so I used red instead..it was so yummy!

Excellent! Definitely a keeper! Just as good if not better than what you would get at a restaurant. As some reviewers suggested, I seasoned the chicken with garlic salt and onion powder before putting it in the batter and frying. In the future, I plan to make up lots of chicken, freeze it to pull out and reheat in the oven when I'm serving the meal. I made the chicken earlier in the day and reheated it in the oven before dinner and it turned out great.

Very simple and easy dish, but don't let that turn you off! I was very impressed with how this dish turned out. For a fresher (and slightly healthier) option, juice a fresh pineapple instead of using canned pineapple. A little granish goes a long way with simple dishes like this :)

Made this tonight with my husband. We added some onion into the sauce and the pepper let it sit in the sauce while we made everything else. It really brought out the flavor and became a very authentic chinese dish. Two thumbs up..make this you won't be disappointed. This is going to be a staple in our menu now.

HELPFUL TIPS IN PREPARING: 1. Make the chicken ahead and save for whenever you will eat this dish. Heating in oven at 350 for 15 min. really does work and chicken is really crispy but that's really b/c the batter is so dang perfectly thick. DEFINITELY start with making the chicken batter, as described like pancake mix. When cutting recipe in half, ALSO cut in half the chicken batter (1C water, flour, 1T cornstarch&oil, 1/2t salt, 1/5t baking powder, egg). I never have self-rising flour, so that's where the baking powder comes in. 2. The sauce is only good for about 4 chicken breasts, otherwise double the sauce. It thickens up REALLY well, but as mentioned ...make sure the cornstarch is completely dissolved in water before adding it. I keep the sauce on lowest setting until ready to eat. 3. Take some frozen veggies, fry in pan with some soy sauce for a great side dish! 4. My kids love the chicken w/o sauce, so they think it's chicken nugget night w/ketchup. 5. Tastes better to coat the chicken in sauce rather than dumping over, but only use the chicken you plan on eating so you can save the rest for leftovers. Otherwise it gets mushy the next day when mixed in with sauce. I just reheat sauce while chicken is in oven for 15 min.

Thought this turned out great! Really is comparable to a restaraunt. I seasoned the chicken with black pepper and garlic pepper and added a little garlic pepper to the batter. Does make a lot!

Great batter! It was fantastic and didn't even need sauce. Followed other reviews with adding baking powder and salt to regular flour. Didn't have orange food coloring, so I added green and pink. Still want to play around with the sauce. Great recipe.
