I use yams instead of sweet potatoes, they are not the same thing and I prefer yams. Yams are naturally very sweet so when using yams, cut the sugar down by adding 1/4 cup at a time to taste. Sweet potatoes are not as sweet as yams so more sugar should be used. This dish is always a big hit for the holidays.

My girlfriends and I were not originally planning on making this but after the sweet potatoes were boiled too long to make candied yams we decided we could not just throw them away. So we stumbled upon this recipe and let me tell you it was the best thing at the dinner table. It goes to show you that sometimes the best things happen accidentally.

Made this for thanksgiving and it was wonderful. Everyone liked it including my picky daughter. The only change I made was to add some nutmeg and cinnamon. Will be using this again this year!

This recipe was absolutely WONDERFUL!!! My grandma is an EXCELLENT cook and even makes her own sweet potato dish for Thanksgiving, but this one is even better than hers (I never thought that was even possible). My fiance, and all three kids give this a huge thumbs up! I will definately make again and again and again and.....

As the only vegetarian I know who doesn't like sweet potatoes, it was time I branched out and this recipe was awesome! With a light fluffy texture and crunchy nuts, the flavors combined perfectly. Definitely a new holiday tradition.

Good change from other sweet potato recipes, BUT way too sweet. This would be a good treat to follow up a tour of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! I cut the sugar in half, like other reviewers had recommended. I STILL found it to be too sweet. Next time I will cut it down to a 1/4 of what the recipe calls for the sugar...

Amazing! Followed the recipe as is. Super sweet and delicious. =) Not so good for leftovers though... doesn't heat up to the same consistency. I don't even really like sweet potatoes but these are to die for!

Loved it! I cut back on the butter by nearly 1/2 and the sugar as well, and it was still wonderful - love the topping! I may try adding some orange flavor next time as well, a little juice and zest to see how that it. Thank you for this wonderful recipe!

Great recipe, well received. I ran out of the 'topping' though, only covered about 3/4 of the casserole.

This is a great dish. I made my regular sweet potato dish and then used the "leftovers" or the mushy parts I didn't use in my main dish. It was better than I expected, everyone raved. Now, I will only make this dish.

I cut both brown & white sugar in half, and it was still too sweet for my taste. Somehow it did taste a bit better as leftovers. I doubt I'll make this recipe again.

I substituted mini marshmallows for the 1 cup of white sugar and soy milk for condensed milk. (lactose intolerant) I also added some nutmeg and cinnamon. It turned out pretty good and not overly sweet. The topping alone is sweet enough!

A very good recipe, much better than my old recipe, which was way too sweet for everyone. This is the first year I didn't have to throw out my sweet potatoes.

Very good recipe. I didn't use quite as much butter as called for and it was still very good. Topping was great, very candy-like.

To save reading reviews: cut sugar in the potato mixture down. The sweet, rich topping is perfect. My tweak--boiling potatos in OJ and using it as the liquid (instead of milk). Yummy!!!
