This year I was trying to keep Thanksgiving a bit healthier and looked for a new sweet potato recipe. My family is never big on sweet potatoes, but I love them. This was the first year almost all of what I made went. (I did make half a recipe for 8) I have to say this was a big hit for those who tried it. I think the fact that the apple slices were on top make it look a little more appetizing. I just made minor changes to the recipe. I used less lemon juice and less butter. Since I had no pumpkin spice I used nutmeg. Also did not have orange extract, so I used orange juice. All in all a great recipe!!!! Loved it and plan to use it every year from now on. TIP: I made this the day before and just reheated it on Thanksgiving. This was a time-saver and I didn't notice anything about the taste that indicated it was reheated.

This was really good! I had to make some alterations d/t ingredients on hand; I used just a cinnamon/sugar shaker for the seasoning, so no brown sugar, or pumpkin pie and used toasted chopped almonds on top, and I used fresh orange juice. For the butter I just greased the pan with margarine and then when it was almost done baking I melted about 1 T and poured it over the top. I also did not peal either the apples ir sweet potatoes as this is our preference, and I sliced the potatoes before boiling which made the time decreased to about 10 mins. All in all, and very good, healthy recipe!

I have been looking for this recipe I had it in a magazine and lost it, or put it in that special place where it is safe. Well now I have it save in my recipe box... and once again we will enjoy it on Thanksgiving.

This was delicious. I added extra apples, and some applesauce, and a little extra cinnamon, and baked it in my crockpot so i would have room in the oven for my stuffing. it works great in the crockpot too!

This is a delicious recipe for sweet potatoes, and a nice alternative to the mashed/marshmallow type recipes. The sweet potatoes and apples are a great compliment. The pecan crumble tops it off with the just the right amount of sweet and crunch. The only change I made was to grate fresh orange peel into the pecan and brown sugar topping, as I didn't have orange extract. Very yummy accompaniment to the Thanksgiving turkey.

I first discovered this recipe in the Oct/Nov. 02 issue of "Light and Tasty" and it quickly became my family’s favorite sweet potato dish for our holiday dinners, as well as, holiday pot lucks. You can easily double or triple this recipe with excellent results. I have cut the prep time down by first peeling and slicing the sweet potatoes. Instead of boiling them whole for 25 mintues, as stated I steam the slices in a steamer basket for approximately 5 - 8 minutes. This cuts down the cooking time and I don't have to handle a “hot potato”. Once the potatoes are steamed I just follow the rest of the recipe as written. This is an excellent way to enjoy sweet potatoes in a healthy manner vs. the high fructose corn syrup marshmallow laden version that expands the waistline!

The apples didn't really cook down, even after baking it an additional 15 minutes. It was a little dry and needs a sauce. However, the flavor was good.
