"Very sweet steamed pudding, more like a cake, that is typically served at holiday time. I cook this into my double boiler. Even though this cooks on simmer, it is wise to check that the pan does not boil dry! This is traditionally served with hard sauce."

Directions

  1. Grease the inside bowl of a double-boiler.
  2. Mix flour, bread crumbs, water, molasses, figs, raisins, walnuts, orange peel, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and nutmeg together in a bowl until batter is well incorporated; spoon batter into the prepared double-boiler bowl and cover.
  3. Fill the bottom half of a double boiler with water and bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer. Place bowl in the simmering water and cover. Steam until pudding is cooked through, adding water as needed, 3 hours. Cool slightly with cover ajar before serving warm.

This is a family favorite, made each Thanksgiving and Christmas. The original recipe was handed down by my great grandmother.

This was a huge hit! I was nervous because I'd never eaten figgy pudding, let alone made it, but it turned out great. I didn't make any sauce to go with it, but drizzled cream over it instead. (Maybe that's weird? I don't know. We liked it.) My husband and two young kids both loved it, including the one who won't eat figs. The only part I wasn't sure about was the orange peel strips. It seemed strange to leave them in there. But again, I'd never had it before, so I don't know.
