So delicious. I doubled and when it came time to put on the butter and sugar, I nuked it to make it more pourable/spreadable. I am making it again for Thanksgiving.

No need to pre-melt the butter, baking will take care of it. Just mix the dry ingredients together, sprinkle them over the squash and apples then chop up the butter on/in/over the whole thing!

This is probably one of the best things I have ever made or tasted!!!!! I love this recipe. I used 1/4 t. nutmeg and 1/4 cloves instead of mace. I am going to make for all the holiday get togethers.

The flavor was good, especially for the apple. There wasn't enough liquid to cook the squash well. If I make it again I will increase the amount of topping, bake it covered first then remove the cover to brown the top. Over all I liked the flavor but my husband said it was a waste of perfectly good apples. :-P I didn't have mace so I used most nutmeg and a little bit cinnamon instead.

We loved this! I tried half the recipe with oil and half with applesauce, and they were both delicious. I'd stick with the applesauce next time to keep it lower in fat. Thanks for the great recipe!

This was fantastic. First time I have cooked squash this way. I also cubed my squash and my apples. This didn't make for a perfect presentation. But it was delicious. I also added a handful of chopped walnuts and a couple tablespoons of dried cranberries. Delish!!!

FANTASTIC!!! I could have eaten the whole dish. The squash was tender but held its shape and the apples (Stayman) softened perfectly. I would cut down just a bit on the sugar. But this recipe is wonderful. Ten stars

I followed the suggestions of another reviewer and used banana squash and Granny Smith apples, cubing both of them. I didn't have mace, so I just used fresh nutmeg. This was awesome. The squash is melt-in-your-mouth delicious. This has the delicious buttery sweet flavor of candied yams without being overly sweet or heavy.

Like a few other reviewers i didn't have mace so I substituted cinnamon and nutmeg. Baked it covered in the oven and stirred halfway. Turned out great! All 4 kids LOVED it and they didn't know it had squash in it!! LOL

This was easy to make and tasty. I did not have mace, and like some of the other users, I used a bit of nutmeg instead. I cubed both the apples and squash, and 50 minutes at 385F was perfect. My husband and I ate the whole thing in one sitting!

My family really liked this recipe! Even my husband and toddler. In fact, my toddler declared them num nums, and would not touch the rest of his supper! I followed another reviewers suggestion and chopped the squash, about a 1/4" cubes. I then peeled and cored the apples, and sliced them nice and thick. Otherwise, they would be mush by the end of the cooking time. Just enough sweet, and with added cinnamon, just enough spice!

Mace and Winter Squash were made for each other, and the proportions in this recipe were perfect-- not too sweet or oily. I was cooking for a crowd, so used a 10# Banana Squash and 3# of Granny Smith apples; alternated quarter-rounds of squash with apple slices and sprinkled raisin size chopped prunes in a deep roaster 4 layers deep. Taking an idea from another review, I coarse chopped 2C of pecans and toasted them in butter, then added brown sugar and cinnamon and stirred them until caramel coated and poured them on top shortly before serving for a nutty, crunchy topping. NO LEFTOVERS, and everybody wanted the recipe!

I cut the apples and squash into cubes and mixed them all up after pouring the sauce over it. I topped it all with pecans and everyone loved it. I didn't use the mace, since a lot of folks didn't like it, instead I used nutmeg, cinnamon and a little cayenne pepper.
