I made this last night. Very easy, I really like it. Personally, I'm not liking the celery in it, but I can always omit it next time. Thanks for the great recipe!

I made this with a little lamb instead because we don't eat pork. Came out great.

This was just about the best split pea soup I have ever made. I did make a few minor changes though. I did not use marjorim as I did not have any. Did not put in the potato. I added about 3 tsp. "Better than Bouillon" chicken base. Oh, and I added 1 bay leaf. DELICIOUS!

My family really enjoyed this varation of split pea soup. I am a fan of marjoram so I was interested in trying it in split pea soup. I was please to say the least. I had to substitute smoked bacon in place of the ham bone. I cooked the bacon with onions just until the bacon was slightly crisp and the onions began to carmalize. I believe that added a great smoky sweet flavor to the soup. My son loves split pea soup. He often eats the condensed canned version, and was like, "Mom, this is way better than canned soup. Make this kind from now on."

I made this using a slow cooker. I used a bacon hock as this was all I could find at Coles. Instead of all water, some of the liquid was vegetable stock for me. Really reccommend pre soaking the split peas. For my second trial, I will add some pork stock cubes to the liquid and some Worcestshire sauce during the cooking process. I cooked on low for 10 hours and then teased the meat off the hock and returned to meat to the soup for another hour. Thanks for this recipe. It's a keeper.

Yummy. I didn't have any celery but I added a bit of water, chicken soup base and a few odd spices and this was really good. Even my sister who doesn't like pea soup liked it.

I used this recipe and the one on the back of the dried split pea bag to make my soup. It came out very well. Used chicken buoillion cubes instead of water. Will used this recipe only next time since it seems a bit easier.

Excellent split pea soup recipe... this is pretty much the split pea soup of my childhood, and it turned out very well. Some changes I made were replacing half the water with chicken broth, and cooking it a bit longer on the stove to cook off some of the liquid. I like my soup thick... just a personal preference. Absolutely wonderful with a baked potato or fresh-baked bread.

Very good for first attempt at split pea soup. I will definately do this again. The only difference is that I added one bay leaf as I normally do with all my soups, and used college inn chicken broth instead of water.

YUMYUMYUMYUM!!! This was my first attemt at split pea and boy was it good!! I had a ham bone with lots of meat left on it from last weekend and I did make a few changes. But that is what is great about this recipe, you can change it up and it will always taste great because it is just a good foundational recipe. I was going to be gone all day so I threw all of my ingredients in the crock pot and (No I did not soak the peas, big mistake, my house is a smelly war zone tonight. SO definately soak if you dont want the gas by product) I added everything but the celery and I only used 2 potatoes, I like more of just the peas. It was perfect. I cooked it on high for 7-8 hours and it was great!! Try this one!

Nice all round recipe - can change it around, which I like. Made it once with the hambone boiled first and then the second time just added leftover ham. I've also tried it with potato and then later just omitted it and added garlic and oregano. I like not mushing up the cooked soup in a blender like some recipes suggest, so this recipe was immediately more to my liking. I also use chicken stock for some of the water when I have it (like someone suggested). Now to try the sausage idea - :-)

This was my first time making split pea. I used the ham bone from our Easter dinner. This was outstanding and very easy to do. As suggested, I used two quarts of chicken broth rather than water overnight. I doubled the carrots and potatoes simply to add more so I can freeze. I added more pepper as well. True test came when my 7 year old son said it was awesome. As with most children, he said it looked disgusting, but our rule is to always try something and he LOVED it. Thanks for the recipe!!!!!!

Very good!!! After soaking the beans, I drained them and used chicken broth. I added way more carrots and celery than it called for. This was a really easy recipe. I am making it again right now!!! YUMMY!!!!

Thought I'd give this a try, as it is good comfort food. Simmered the peas on the stove for about 3 minutes, then soaked for about 1.5 hours before adding ingredients and cooking futher. Added frozen baby carrots, dash of thyme and rosemary, black pepper, finely chopped onions, & real bacon bits for flavour. Didnt have celery, ham or potatoes, and the texture and taste were still great! DH liked it enough to take to work. A success. thanks for sharing.
