My husband and I loved this dish just as it is! I used wheat-free soy sauce to make this recipe gluten free. I didn't have any fennel, so I made the Chinese 5-spice powder from the individual ingredients (pepper, cloves, 5-star anise, cinnamon, and fennel seeds, 1 teaspoon, ground, of each),minus the fennel, and served it over jasmine rice. The Chinese 5-spice powder, minus the fennel, was key to the exquisite flavor of this dish, and the amount recommended was just right for us. The excellent taste made me feel like a gourmet cook, even though it was quite simple and easy to prepare.

Nice and quick. I didn't have 5 spice powder but found a recipe and made my own. Substituted the veggies with what I had on hand, very versatile. Would like a bit more sauce for the rice.

I made this recipe with a few modifications and it was fantastic. All I had was a can of shredded beef and I had to modify the vegetables to use what I had on hand. I did serve it over white rice as well. It was fabulous and very easy to make.

This was ok. I liked everything in it and it was easy/fast to prepare .. I think the sauce is bizarre to me (I made my own Chinese five-spice since I didn't have any on hand but had all the ingredients) ... it's an unusual flavor. I also didn't have water chestnuts or onion but added a frozen stir-fry mix and served over Chinese vermicelli noodles. It wasn't terrible but not my favorite either. Will have this for leftovers tomorrow - hoping it gets better overnight!

This is REALLY good! I followed the recipe exactly (except for the water chestnuts) and it came out great - the spinach is a nice touch! Tonight I am trying it with chicken and adding broccoli and zuchinni. Thanks for a great post.

Oh my gosh...so good! Did everything exact except served on sesame noodles instead of rice. Might need a little more sauce though if I had served on rice, but with noodles it was perfect!

Good recipe, but thought it need more than just the 1/2 tsp five-spice. I was looking for a last minute healthy stir-fry recipe and did not have time to marinate the meat. Instead, I ended up just cooking the beef in 1/2 of the 1/4 c soy sauce. It came out good, but again the dish just seemed like it could have used more of the seasoning. We served it over brown rice.

it was good but we all thought it could use a little spice or something to give it more flavour, maybe hoisen sauce or more soy, something. I will read more of the reviews to see what others did. Put 4 cups of spinach in because 6 seemed like a lot but it shrivels tons, next time we will use the 6 cups.

Although I made a few changes, I'm sure this recipe would be delicious as written. I couldn't find five spice powder, so I used a stir-fry package mix. I also added zucchini and red onion. I shredded the carrots, because I don't like them when they're to crisp.
