Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 egg
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 2 teaspoons ground allspice
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • FROSTING:
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 4 cups confectioners' sugar

Directions

  1. In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Beat in molasses, water and egg. Combine flour, ginger, allspice, baking soda and cloves; gradually add to the creamed mixture. Pour into a greased 15-in. x 10-in. x 1-in. baking pan. Bake at 375 degrees F for 18-22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool on wire rack. In a mixing bowl, cream shortening, butter and lemon juice. Beat in sugar until fluffy. Frost bars.
