I made this recipe as written, but 4th it since I was only using it to top a pie (my version of a french apple pie). It was delicious! Nice stiff consistency...tastes like the buttercream used at the bakery. Yum!

This is a yummy frosting. I never made frosting before but it was better than the birthday you buy at the store. I sub 1/2 of the shortening for butter and use milk (that was all we had) instead of heavy cream. It was good. thanks.

This is a great frosting for decorating cakes. I have used it for 3 cakes so far and am very happy with it! I like that it is so easy and I won't have to buy frosting from the bakery to decorate birthday cakes with from now on! It also makes a large batch. I followed other reviewers suggestions and used 1/2 crisco and 1/2 butter. That's the only alteration I made from the original. Thanks!

I loved this frosting! The only substitution I made was I used butter extract in place of the vanilla. It didn't get 5 stars because it didn't yield as much frosting as it says in the recipe. I ended up having to make more to complete my project.

The texture was perfect, but the taste was not for me. I ended up tossing the whole thing. It tasted just like shortening. My kids tasted it and didn't care for it either.

This frosting was easy to make and delicious. It piped very well. It was very versatile, easily thinned out with more cream or stiffened up with a little extra powder sugar. I started with a little less cream which worked well for the border. Um Yummy.

Yum-my. Just like the stuff you get at the store, but not quite as thick. Frosted on David's yellow cake from this site. I recommend this more to cover cakes, not as much for decoration since it is not as stiff

Used 1 1/2 cup shortening, 1/2 cup butter, and reduced sugar to 5 cup, otherwise kept true to the recipe. It's consistency is excellent, and the only complaint I have is knowing I can't assemble my 50 cupcakes ahead of time, because I just don't have the room in the fridge, and I'm topping with a little bit of fondant. I might take the chance if it were January....but it's August, so...last minute put-together it is. The flavor is good too. Kids love it, and it will go in my box as THE buttercream recipe to use when I don't want to cook.

I used 2 C butter instead of shortening, piped half the frosting on home-made cupcakes, then added 3/4 C cocoa to the rest of the it to make chocolate frosting. The frosting held up well indoors for at least a day. Cupcakes didn't last past a day, so I don't know how well they would have held up past that.

People, this is an awesome recipe. I did use 1/2 butter and 1/2 regular crisco. I made three variations for a luau. I added lemon zest and a tbsp of lemon juice, key lime zest and key lime juice, and coconut extract. Additionally some cupcakes were iced in vanilla. All four flavors got great reviews from my guests. This is my go-to frosting for evermore. Love it!

I don't know if it is because it was humid when I made this, or if it was because I used half shortening and half butter, but this turned out waaaaaay too soft. I couldn't do anything with it when it came to decorating. But it did taste delicious :o)

easy to make and delicious. The only change I made was using half and half instead of heavy cream because I had none on hand. It still turned out perfect though:-)

This was the first time I EVER made homemade icing and it was wonderful! I did what other reviewers suggested and used 1/2 butter 1/2 crisco and 5 cups powder sugar and 4ozs heavy cream. My hubby who loves sweets said it wasn't sweet enough for him but everyone else loved it. I'm not a huge sweets person so 5 cups was enough sweetness for me. It makes a TON of frosting I did 12 cupcakes and a cake w/ frosting left over. This is a keeper THANKS RICK!!!!

This frosting was pretty good - I read the reviews so I di d some the changes used 1/2 cup of butter and 1/2 cup butter shortening - I used a lot of confectioners sugar to get this to be pretty stiff it was quite runny - I do wish I has more sugar bec I would have liked the frosting to have been a bit more stiff for the cakes I was decorating all in all it was pretty good.

Exceptional. I used it to do the fancy frosting swirls on top of cupcakes. I did the coconut cream pound cake as cupcakes and frosted with this but instead of vanilla extract in the frosting I used coconut extract and it was AMAZING.
