The recipe was way too sweet for me (it's just a personal preference.) I tried it again in the crockpot using a spiral sliced ham, and pouring 1 can of cola on the ham, instead of the brown sugar and cooking it on low for about 5 hours. The sweetness was perfect for me, and I do believe it would be better for diabetics also. Also, to cut the sweetness, you can add mustard, which, when used with brown sugar is quite good. This basic recipe has hundreds of variations depending on personal tastes. You can add cranberry sauce and mustard for a really delicious taste.
